Rated 2 out of 5 by Critchpics Fabric has changed - Strange chemical odor
I purchased 2 sets of these sheets years ago, and the percale was thick and crisp. They've worn very well, so I recently ordered another set, even though I'd read the negative reviews.
Well I should have listened. Out-of-the-box the new version of these sheets has a slick coating with a strange chemical smell. Washed them several times, and the smell went away, but the surface didn't change. Made me suspicious that they might contain polyester. Also, these sheets are much thinner than the original. Going back.

We purchased the cream colored sheets for our Queen bed. I washed them twice before sleeping on them. We've washed them several more times since then. These sheets are ok. I'm used to Jersey Knit sheets, which are very soft and conform to you sleeping on your side. These LLBean sheets are good quality and fit the pillow top mattress well. They do make "noise" as you move around in them, much like hotel sheets. They aren't the softest sheets I've been on, but they are better than standard sheets. Overall, they aren't bad and I think they will last a while....unlike the Jersey sheets.

Crisp, beautiful blue color, generous pockets on fitted sheet.
But sheets are scratchy ! Washed them five times trying to get them softer. Absolutely cannot sleep on them.
Have loved LL Bean flannel sheets, but these Pima cotton percale ones are rough !
Will return them

I love these sheets. They are soft and silky. I always thought I had to have a higher thread count but not with these sheets. I took them out of the packaged, washed and dried them, put them on the bed and they are wonderful. Nothing scratchy about them. Now that it is getting to be summer, it is great to have a sheet that is cool to the touch. The material is a good weight and will probably last for years. These sheets and the matching pillow cases are worth every penny I spent on them.

Ok. 280 thread count is far below anything I'd been led to believe was an acceptable sheeting material. Thanks to LL Bean, I've been given a serving in humble pie! Somewhere online I'd read that these were some of the best percale sheets available and they truly are. They need a few washings to get rid of that 'fresh out of the package' feel but then... BOY, OH BOY! They become EXACTLY what you dream percale sheets will be. They don't shrink either! They may be the perfect percale. A note on sizing: the fitted sheet fits a very deep mattress (mine is 16") but you may want to consider a size up for your top sheet or else it may not have enough material to tuck under on the sides.

These percale sheets were rough and scratchy when we first got them. I've washed them five times and they have gotten smoother with each wash. They have a cool, crisp, smooth feel to them. They will be perfect in the summertime when it is hot and humid. They are a little thinner and not the quality I was expecting for the price, but otherwise they are great sheets.

I can only speak to the color as I did not open the sheets. The mid-blue that looks so nice and deep in the picture is actually a cornflower blue. Returning,

Finally, I've learned! Only buy these L. L. Bean sheets at a reasonable price. I can't believe the money I've wasted through the years with sheets that pill, are too short, too thin and poor quality.
These are heavy duty cotton, but perfect in summer and winter, with a wonderful luxurious feel. They wash and dry beautifully and have only gotten softer with age! I've had them about 3 years.
A no-brainier for me and with L. L. Bean's unconditional warranty.

Rated 5 out of 5 by EliAlKi Outstanding Percale Sheets
I ordered a set of the plain white 280-Thread-Count Pima Cotton Percale Sheets for my new king-size bed and find them to be outstanding in every way. The have a nice medium weight, lovely quality thread and weave, excellent hemming/finishing and, last but not least, that wonderful crisp, cool feel of a perfect percale. For what it's worth, I'm a very choosy, hem-inspecting, textile snob with high standards and these exceed my expectations, especially at the price point. The only thing that would make them better is if they were made in the USA!
That said, I am completely puzzled by the negative reviews. The only explanations I can come up with are that 1.) there have been occasional quality control issues and/or 2.) some people simply don't understand the difference between percale and sateen sheets. If you are concerned about the former, don't hesitate to order these sheets - on the off-chance there's an issue, Bean has a 100% guarantee (what do you have to lose?)! As for the latter, these are outstanding basic percale sheets of excellent quality and I have not found better; if you want the feel of 340-thread-count sateen (or jersey or flannel), well then don't buy percale and then blame it for not being sateen.
