Rated 4 out of 5 by Gateway Better than eggshell orthopedic
I bought this to replace the large eggshell orthopedic insert because it is so difficult to get the cover on. I knew the premium dog bed mattress had a smooth cover which makes it easy to put the cover on. That is why I got it. I do wish, however, that the smooth cover on the mattress could be taken off and washed. That is why I gave it a good instead of an excellent. My dog likes the mattress, but then he also liked the eggshell orthopedic. It took 2 adults and much pushing and pulling to get the cover on the eggshell mattress. I cannot use the eggshell mattress, but I'm grateful that our nice fleece cover works on the premium dog bed mattress.

The replacement mattress we ordered did not hold up- my dog is about 52 pounds and she likes her bed but it was mush after a few months. The most replacement , ordered in October 2012 did not last as long as the few previous ones. Hopefully just a fluke

We have three of these dog pillows and they are the best. The covers are easily washed and cleaned. However, as our dog ages she has periods of incontinence. Why can't you come up with an inner liner that can be totally, not just spot, cleaned? Or if that isn't feasible, sell a waterproof "pillow" case so we could cover and protect the inner liner? Judging by other reviewers, I am not alone in this one failing of your dog beds. I'd give it ten stars if you would solve this problem!

narie45 Go ahead and wash it gently.
One of my dogs had a major incontinence problem on the bed followed by the other dog deciding to mark his territory on the same spot. What a stench! Yes, you will void the warrenty if you wash the insert- it clearly states spot clean only, but my dog bed insert was either getting washed or tossed- warrenties didn't cover it's problem. No alternatives.
I have front load machine, set it on hand wash, used a down wash cleaner and set for double rinse. Put it in the dryer on very cool, and I have a usable dog bed insert that no longer stinks up the place. OK, the fill in the center isn't perfectly positioned any more, but it is good enough. I really wish L.L.Bean would design the inserts so that they could washed without so much shifting in the center section. Perhaps some stitching in center like a big astrick?

Durdleeze Replacement not as good as original
The original bed was very stiff and hard to get in the cover, but the good side is that the bed held up (for the most part) with a dog that likes to re-arrange his bed. The cover has held up great with no holes - even with him digging on it every night. Other beds/covers held up for 6 months; I've had this cover over 2 years and it's still in great shape and gets washed frequently.
Back to the insert...I finally decided it was time to replace the insert as the XL dog bed was in a continuous ball. Unfortunately the new insert wasn't as structured as the original and within two days was being "re-arranged". My solution? Stuff the old and new beds inside one cover. The dogs now have a nice over-stuffed bed that seems to satisfy both dogs, the digger and the one that sprawls out.

I purchased this for our Lab about 3 years ago and he loved it as much as we did. He still loves sleeping on it, but it has smelled like musty dog for over a year and it can not be thrown in the washer. Febreeze only helps momentarily. The cover has been through many washes, but the insert needs to be cleanable too. It says to spot clean only. The center part of the insert is also bunched up and uneven and has been since shortly after we got it. I try to even out the filling every time I wash the cover. I think I will try a different type of insert next time.

Rated 4 out of 5 by buddyandlucysmom great dog bed!
We have had LLBean dog beds since 1995. Our last dog used the same dog bed her whole life (we even used it for our current dogs when they were puppies as a crate liner!). That was a small and fine for one 20 lb. fox terrier. Four years ago we got our dogs(sibling fox terriers), and immediately purchased a medium dog bed with sherpa/denim cover. They have loved it the whole time. Several months ago though my husband washed the insert (he didn't know that I always removed the cover and washed it and not the insert). The original shape was lost and the mattress became so lumpy that there were several spots that offered no cushion against the floor. The dogs stopped sharing the bed in favor of our sofa! So I ordered a replacement filler and last night they shared their bed again! (and seemed very content.)
The cover is pretty tough and has withstood their nightly "bed making" ( scratch, scratch, scratch, dig,dig,dig...).
I recommend this bed very highly, but if you do need to wash the insert, be aware that it may not retain it's shape.
I agree with another reviewer that though they are costlier than other beds, you may not ever need to replace.

We have an assortment of these beds - all sizes and shapes. We still have one of the covers dating back to the first LL Bean dog bed that I purchased in 1984. The inserts don't last as long because we've had a couple of dogs who relieved themselves on them or one that loved to bunch up the bed so the filling shifted and bunched. Our dogs especially love the fleece covers in the winter.

Rated 2 out of 5 by KinAZ Not meant for XL dogs
After reading the numerous raving reviews for this replacement bedding I decided to purchase for my dog. At first I was really happy with the product, however after 3 months (the average life expectancy for this family) it was flat and practically useless. That was about a year ago. I have 130lb Great Dane and I imagine like every other bed out there, it's just not made for the natural size and weight of my "lap" dog. I think I just expected that for the money it would have kept it's padding a little better. At this point the bed has been folded in thirds and is way to small bet have not found a better option in the last year of looking.

Rated 5 out of 5 by MinnesotaPup Best dog bed ever
I have had this bed ever since my dog was young, about 10 years now (she's 12 now) and she has slept on it every night. When I take it out of the cover to wash the cover it still looks exactly as shown in the photo, looks like new. I have never washed the bed insert itself. I hesitated a lot on spending this much on a dog bed but in hindsight I have saved hundreds of dollars over the years on not ever having to replace it. Also it is surprisingly large for a medium, mine measures 31x38 from seam to seam. My dog (a Keeshond) is 40 lbs and the bed is very generously sized for her.
