My two feline friends have TWO "dog" beds now, from L.L.Bean. I waited too long between buying the first and the second, so they are not the same beds. I was worried that the second bed would not be used as it's just a flat bed and not the comfy couch like the other one. We caught one of the persnickety pusses napping in the sun, so we wanted to pass along that cats like this bed too! (Just don't tell them it's a dog bed).

Rated 2 out of 5 by Seago2 Not as thick as it used to be, no way to wash it
This middle of this dog bed is not as thick as it used to be. The ridges along the sides, between the "bumper" side areas and the center area, actually are flush with the floor. To top it all off my puppy just peed on it and guess what? Spot clean only. Be prepared. If you are looking for the dog bed of ten years ago, this is not it. And if you've got a puppy in the house or a dog who drools a lot, give it a miss. I would return it but at this point I'm just ready to throw it out. Also, the cover is not of the quality it used to be. I have the extra large in khaki color. How am I going to return an extra large dog bed...? Think twice.

Rated 2 out of 5 by HoosierMama2 Quality has declined ... (sigh)
Our Cav King Charles spaniel has two of these dog bed sets that I ordered about 6 years ago. One is the small rectangle and the other is the medium size. They have stood the test of time all these years. They still look good, but I wanted a different color.
About 4 months ago, I ordered two new dog bed sets in new colors ... both in the small rectangular size. The weight of the new fabric cover appears to be the same and it seems like it will be durable. However, my old covers could be vacuumed with the dust brush to quickly remove fur from the covers. The new ones don't as readily release the fur and these are difficult to vacuum. Additionally, I feel the new pads are much thinner and oddly misshapen. I've decided to go through the hassle of returning them. I'll stick with the old ones until I find a suitable replacement.

Rated 1 out of 5 by callmewhatever Really disappointed in the insert.
I bought this bed for my new rescue. My last dog's L.L. bed lasted over 14 years and though we recycled it for the new pup for a while, after 2 years we thought it was time to get one with her own name on it! Well, I hate to say it, but the insert is bizarre, the center "nesting area" is so high that she nests on the edge in the crevice formed by the inner lump and the outer border with part of her body on the floor. She's 65 lbs. so she's on the small side for the large bed. I read similar review's before I made this purchase, but thought that certainly you would have corrected the problem, being who you are. Well, I just haven't had the time to send it back, it is monogramed. I was wondering if the foam insert would fit the cover or if you have fixed the huge mountain in the middle problem on inserts you are selling now? PS.We have the denim cover in the rust w/ the beige piping and script monogram. It really looks nice with our other stuff, too bad the pup doesn't like it.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Whoodler Not designed by a dog owner!
I agree with the other reviewers' assessments that this bed doesn't meet LL Bean's usual standards and is not worth the money. I just learned that the insert is not washable! What kind of dog bed would not be washable?? I was told by customer service that it can only be "surface spot cleaned" which in my case is totally inadequate. Unfortunately my pup is in an inquisitive phase where she eats everything and then decides whether it was in fact edible. If not, then back it comes, soaking into the bed! So now the expensive bed is smelly garbage! I am very disappointed they could not figure out that washing would be important some time in the life of this product and accommodate that in the design. I hardly expected to be throwing it out in just a few months.

Rated 2 out of 5 by FlyingCustomer Good Cover, Poor Padding
Have both large and extra large sizes for about six years now. After numerous washings the cover is holding up well. The problem is lack of padding that comes with the bed. Very skimpy, so you'll need to go to your local fabric shop and buy some foam padding to keep your dog from bottoming out on the floor. Think of this purchase as buying a good cover and then having to furnish your own padding.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Newfoundland1 Ext Lg
The outer shell is very durable and easily cleaned in the washer, I have two of the Extra Lg beds for my Newfoundland Dog plus an extra bed cover, the draw back to these beds is they become hard in the middle, that is the filling over time will migrate outwards from the center.
What I have had to do to combat this is cut down some Memory foam to the size of the bed and install it inside over the padding that comes with the bed.
They really need to come up with a better solution for the padding in these beds, yes they will work for a dog that is not a heavy weight, if you purchase one of these beds do so with the knowledge that if you have a heavy weight Dog you're going to have to provide extra padding inside the bed.

by Berkshire2700 Nice thick dog bed!
I was most worried about what size to get. We have 50lb Labradoodle, who's still growing, we're thinking she'll top out at 60lbs. This bed is the perfect size for her. If she goes over the 60lbs, it will be a little small. Size is good for our smaller living room, we just didn't have the room for the large. The stuffed insert is very thick, and our dog seems to love it!
