Great protection for cold weather. Would recommend this over, e.g. some far more expensive similar winter coats.
Zipper a little tricky, need to be careful when aligning to close.

I have had the 3/4 version of this wonderful coat for 2 years and it has kept me warm and dry through 2 awful winters. It is gorgeous, too!! And it washes and dries beautifully, still looks brand-new. i cannot say enough good things about it. Thank you, LLBean!

We live in northern Vermont and the temperatures this winter have been BRUTAL. This is the coat that gets me through, I will accept no substitutes. I have had it for 7+ years, the zipper broke (had to step in and out of it, which I did for months because I couldn't bear to give it up), then LL Bean replaced it--pronto. This is the best winter coat I could ask for.

Rated 5 out of 5 by flyingwings Keep me warm the whole winter
It is quite cold in eastern America this winter, so that I decide to buy a cozy and warm down coat for windy and snowy whether. Somehow I found this brand and this ultra long coat. This coat is a little pricy, honestly. But after I bought it, I found it is totally worthy the price. Before this coat, I bought several down coats which are much cheaper but they are not warm enough comparing this ultra long coat. I will recommend it to all my friends who are suffering cold whether. Plus, I wear this coat with a black belt and it looks slim. The color is brown and it is not easy to get dirty. My husband and my friends think I looks warm, cozy and pretty this coat.

This coat is shapeless and probably the most unattractive item of outerwear that I own. I do find the hood difficult, as others have indicated. I have owned it for several years. However, it is the ONLY thing to wear in Boston February 2015 when I have no idea when the next train will come and how long I will be waiting on the platform. It has a lot of down and it is very long - it keeps me warm when I am not moving in very cold temperatures.
To give you an idea of the warmth/coverage of this coat - sometimes I put it on over my PJs + bathrobe and shovel snow in it, in frigid temps, when I can't be bothered changing just to shovel a few inches of snow. No problems. (Otherwise, I wear long underwear + jeans, smartwool + wool or fleece on top, an expedition-grade synthetic fill jacket, and a hat.)

Rated 5 out of 5 by lal1251921 Best Christmas Present Ever!
I live in Chicago, IL and I received this coat as a Christmas present. This was the best present ever!! I commute to work and walk from the train station to my office which is a little under a mile long walk each way and this coat keeps me warm! As I am writing this review it is currently -7 degrees outside with a windchill of about -35 and this coat kept me warm! Underneath I wore a pair of longjohns, corduroy pants, a cami, and a cardigan sweater. While outside I had on two scarfs, a ski hat, LLBean down gloves, socks and my boots and I was fine. Also, I am 5'1'' tall, weigh 125 lbs and I have the small petite, it comes to about my ankles which is exactly what I was looking for. I've noticed others have complained about the hood and while the fur can get in the way a bit it does an excellent job of deflecting the wind from your face so I like it. Also, I like the velcro hood closure, it stays closed and it adds an extra layer of warmth for my face. As other reviewers have noted, I do wish the pockets were a bit deeper but that is seriously my only complaint. Buy this coat, you will not regret it!

Rated 5 out of 5 by speechdr Making it through Boston 2015 Winter
If you are debating purchasing this coat - do yourself a favor and BUY IT!
I purchased this in November 2014 and am now writing this mid-February 2015. In the past few months, it's seen A LOT of use. I live in Boston - Winter of 2015 has not been nice to us. We currently have approximately 7 feet of snow on the ground with more predicted. It's been FREEZING and we've had loads of heavy precipitation. I commute to work - I walk to a bus stop and wait. Take a bus to the train and wait. Take a train into Boston and walk 15 minutes to the Boston Common area. I tell you these details to show that I've been IN THE ELEMENTS with this coat. And..
It totally passes the test. The hood (without the fur trim - see below) is VERY warm. I cannot think of a wind that would be strong enough to blow it off your head if you have it completely fastened. I do sometimes wear a hat plus the hood - but that's personal preference since I'm outside so long during my commute. The coat is really long (I got a medium and I'm 5'6", 150 lbs - fits great with room for bulky clothes underneath). Possibly a touch too long, but the bonus is that it feels like you're in a sleeping bag :) It's VERY WARM. Of course, my face/ hands/ toes are cold when I'm waiting for the bus and the train - but I'm honestly pretty comfortable under this coat. It REALLY does the trick, even if I'm not totally bundled up underneath (think long johns and loads of socks).
Even if you don't live in an area with an extreme winter like this - it's still a great coat. It is great for even just taking the dog out when it's cold out side.
Nothing is perfect, so here are my cons:
1) The down filling pokes out and "sheds" a bit. The back of my backpack is covered in feathers and I sometimes find feathers on my clothes throughout the day.
2) I do wish the pockets were deeper - but they zip, which I love.
3) The fur lining on the hood is just too much. I can hardly see with it on. But it zips off, which I love - and does LOOK good when it's on.

Rated 2 out of 5 by Nevah Disappointed
Hi - I am so disappointed. I had looked at this coat for several years & finally bought it last year in the fall (2014). Wore it when it was in the teens yesterday and the day before: I was cold. Today, it was below zero; so, I wore another down filled coat underneath the LL Bean coat for warmth. I thought the one LL Bean coat would be sufficient when I bought it for wearing in the teens to below zero to a point but I was wrong. I love the color, the hood, and the length though. So, I am keeping it. I will have to look for another coat that will provide true warmth when in the teens to sub-zero temperatures.

by Eyelini Perfect winter coat!
I needed to buy this to replace a down coat (from a competitor) that had ripped mid-season. Searched online and found this one. Although my first choice of purple was sold out, I chose the Spruce color, which is beautiful. I love the details such as the storm flap covering the zipper and the inside zippered pocket. Pockets are deep enough to hold my gloves. Some people complained that this is a bit boxy, but hey, it's a coat...it's all about function and not as much about fashion! I'd rather be warm in this coat and wear my fitted, stylish clothes underneath. My only complaint is the Velcro flaps on the hood; they kind of get in the way, but when I close them, they provide a windproof seal. This coat will be worn almost every day! I'm 5'0" and 120 lbs. and the Petite XS is roomy enough to fit over my business suits and heavy sweaters. The length is just above my ankles, which is perfect; I love my coats to be long enough to cover my snow boots to block out as much cold weather and wind as possible. If this is offered next year in purple again, I'll probably buy another one.
