I returned this item because the size was too small for most uses.

Made a last-minute decision to buy a kayak 550 miles from home driving a Honda Civic. This kit held a 10' kayak secure at 60mph with absolutely no damage to the boat or the paint on the car. With two front tether points and one in back (plus the straps over the roof and through the door) everything held tight and there was no significant impact on the handling of the car except for a steady vibration and buzz from the front straps. I put some padding where the straps touched the paint, which kept the noise down and added a bit of extra protection.

My husband and I had just bought a kayak to enjoy but after checking out several sports stores and learning that a roof rack would be in the 300 to 500 dollar range we sat on our decision to use it. That is until we saw ll bean's foam product that goes on when you need it and off when you don't. We used it with great ease and got the kayak home with in no time.

The foam blocks and the two straps that go through the cabin work well. But the strap to the front of the car and the other to the back of the car should be ratcheting straps so that you can get it really snug to the vehicle. I plan to go to a hardware store to pick up the needed straps.

We tried using this item over a car rack and it was not deep enough to touch the roof and rolled around as we were trying to put the kayak on. We did not feel that this item was worth the money it cost and did not perform well. We ended up using plastic tubes on the rack with straps that works quite well.

Took my Kayak over 200 miles on top of my compact car, hit the 65 mille per hr with no problems. used and extra tie down in front and back of kayak. Used the ones that came with it on the sides. All went very well and I would recomend this product to be very safe and worth the try. thanks I needed to this because I don't have the lugage racks to use otherwise.
