Rated 4 out of 5 by Cookingfor5 Best way to make ice cream camping
We have 2 of the pint size to make plenty for our family of 5 in different flavors. The kids love making their own ice-cream while camping. The balls have held up well over the years. (We did crack one... learned it can't be used like a soccer ball!) Works best if you open half way through and scrape sides. This is a good time to put in chunky additions like chocolate chips and nuts. We also add more salt and ice as it melts for faster freezing time. Overall fun and sturdy product.

The Ice-cream ball was a granddaughter gift request for Christmas!
I ordered it by phone, as my laptop was o the blitz at the time of ordering. Very pleased with the service and assistance and the item was shipped free and on time as promised. Great way to shop and I will return to this site again!
As for the item itself, my granddaughter was thrilled and we will soon be ordering another for her sister's birthday next month.
I saved gas, time on the road, and the stress of shopping in crowds during the cold and flu season. I'm one happy grandma!!!!!

Me and my children have been very pleased with this ice cream maker... and believe me, we're serious about our ice cream! If you follow the instructions, you will get good home-made ice cream. Is it perfect? No. First, the ice has to be pretty small to fit into the pint size ice-hole. I've had to warn my kids not to try to force the bigger pieces of ice down into the hole as this will likely crack or break the ball. Second, the plastic handle they provide to tighten and loosen the screw-lids needs to be handled with care so you don't break it. It's a great tool, but you can't force it or I fear it could snap, but if you don't use too much pressure it works just fine. Lastly, even though the plastic ball feels pretty solid and well made, I do need to remind the kids not to play too rough with it... otherwise it could get cracked or broken. Roll it only on soft surfaces (carpet, grass, etc.) Don't drop it on a hard surface or hurl it at each other like a football. It's pretty rugged, but not indestructible. Other than these minor issues, it's been a lot of fun. Best of all, it teaches everyone how to make great tasting ice cream with natural ingredients.

I purchased this for my 9 year old granddaughter for Christmas.
It was used immediately at the celebration. A fun activity. It takes a lot of ice and I did not have enough ready in the freezer so we went with a lesser amount. The ice cream never got really hard but more like the consistency of soft ice cream (had I had more ice it may have gotten harder). The taste was great and we all had a little bit. The people rolling the ball went into another room as it is very loud and prevented other conversation.
It is a novelty with quite a bit of preparing, cleaning up and time to make the ice cream.
Having wanted this item for 4 years my granddaughter was thrilled to receive this ice cream ball. How often it will get used is another question but if ever a unique fun activity is needed with the benefit of a tasty treat it is the one to use.

I just purchased and used the ice cream ball. I would definitely recommend this item. I plan on buying another one! We had lots of fun with my grandchildren!
Just one question ... what is the best utensil to use to stir and then scoop out the ice cream? We had some trouble with that, but otherwise it was a fun activity and delicious!!

I got to use this product once or twice before my flavor booklet got washed. We recieved the pint ice cream maker and it worked wonderful. It does take a while to make the ice cream, and you have to make sure you drain the water, replace the ice, add more salt, and scrape the sides of the ice cream. But if you're watching a TV show while you're rolling the ball around, time passes very fast. The icecream recipes are delicious, and you can also create your own. I finally used my noggin' and e-mailed L.L. Bean on how to get recipes again. They promptly responded with two different ways to get recipes. I'm very excited to start making ice cream again. Only thing I would say that is a downfall, the size. Go with the quart size for $10 more, especially if you have a family. Mmmm ice cream! :)

Directions on the box state just add ingredients and shake ball to make ice cream. We added the ingredients as stated on the ball as well as the ice and ice cream salt purchased just for this item. After shaking for 10 minutes as stated on box the ingredients were still liquid except for hardened along the wall which I had to scrape and start again. We shook the ball almost 1/2 hour, added more ice & salt as suggested and still ended up with a runny, lumpy product, not a creamy ice cream as promised on the box. We also tried other ingredients found on the internet but still got the same results.
