Unless you're tall and underweight, most guys who wear cargo shorts wince when they see their reflection on a storefront window. These shorts are a much better looking length, the flatter pockets don't look so clunky, and they don't lose functionality for the slimmer design. The fabric and construction make them spiffy enough for all-around wear.

Rated 2 out of 5 by WisconsinSlim New pair cut too snug
I recently purchased my third pair of these shorts. I've been happy with them in the past, but the legs in the most recent pair are cut narrower than the earlier pairs. I am always conscious of the snug fit, which makes them uncomfortable. I hope this pair is a fluke and not an indication of LL Bean's ongoing efforts to tailor everything. I'll be returning the new shorts.

These might be the nicest short pants I've ever owned. The material is great, and the fit and finish can't be beat. I bought them in stone, and have ordered another pair in dark khaki. Beautiful thing about them is, they don't look like cargo shorts--altho they are just about as useful--you can wear these anywhere, and you will look good and be comfortable, too. Thumbs up, Bean.
I'd give them 5 stars if Bean could remove the annoying velcro closures on the rear pockets. I don't like fighting with the pocket just to get at my wallet. But covering the velcro patch with a small moleskin patch has eliminated the problem.

Rated 3 out of 5 by BoothbayHarborVacationer Needs bigger front pockets
While the Pathfinder shorts may resemble cargo shorts, the front pockets are too small to carry much of anything; they are only 5" x 6", and not gusseted. Also, the rear pockets don't seem very secure because they are held closed with only a small strip of Velcro.
These are the reasons I returned them, which was too bad because the shorts themselves are sturdy and comfortable, and the canvas was soft right out of the bag.

My spouse loves these shorts! The fabric is sturdy but very comfortable. The elastic in the waist also adds to the comfort of the garment. Elastic is a wonderful thing! We bought the Mariner Blue color. It is an attractive dark shade that goes well with most of my spouse's casual shirts. These shorts come out of the dryer without wrinkles and they launder very well - no shrinking or fading. We will definitely purchase additional pairs!

Rated 3 out of 5 by SFPhoto Rugged heavy fabric with some shortcomings
Rugged heavy fabric, plenty of pockets, bit of elastic at the waist - with some shortcomings.
Seem to wear well compared to Tropic Weight model.
But one must realize how stiff and heavy the fabric is even after 1.5 years.
the color has faded in the sun
the fly is very short (5.5 inches)

My husband is 72 and does not wear the baggy and/or long shorts. These are a perfect fit. An older gentleman, he does have a little bit of a belly. The elastic gives just enough to accomodate. They also have a sporty look that he can appreciate. Thanks for not forgetting about the older guys!

Perfect length: shorts should be short, otherwise they would be just too short pants. These are perfect.
Lots of Pockets.
Belt loops for a belt for pocket knife, etc.
Sturdy and comfortable fabric.
Only needed one pair, but ended up with two.

I was really impressed with these until the zipper broke off in a restaurant on our last trip. Fortunately I was wearing a shirt with long tails.
So back they went, but I will re-order. Really good quality otherwise.
