This bag feels good over my shoulder. It allows me to carry all the stuff I think I'll need. A small hand carrying strap would be a good addition. There is a nice selection of colors.

I was looking for a canvas messenger bag that could double as a camera bag for my DSLR and maybe an extra lens when my other photo bags weren't suitable. This bag works very well for that and as a day bag. The fabric is very durable heavy canvas. The leather trim and buckle are attractive. Lots of space and plenty of dividers. My only complaint: there are no slots or pockets in the outer compartment for pens, business cards, cell phone and other small items. That omission keeps me from giving it five stars.

Rated 4 out of 5 by jerseygirl1007 nice bag
I bought this bag to use for school. Reading the other reviews, people commented how big it was, I didn't find that to be the case. I was hoping I could carry my laptop and my class materials in this bag and I can't. It is too small for a 17 inch laptop in a case. If I have my computer in the bag, I can't fit much else. Without the computer, it fits a fair amount. I like the compartments for pens, a water bottle, and other things I need quick access to.
My only complaint is the velcro seal on the outside compartment is coming unsewn.

I needed a decent bag to get my stuff from home to work and back...nothing more nothing less. I carry a MacBook Pro and a leather notebook....though there's room for a little more. The inside zipper pocket is perfect for containing smaller items and the outside pocket has room for stuff too.
I got the khaki color which looks exactly like the picture showed. The strap is adjustable so I can sling it over my shoulder and go. The button clasp is great so you don't have to unbuckle anything to get inside.
This bag is perfect for me. Laptop, a leather notebook, and room for some extra, but not BIG extra. Don't let the negative comments fool you. It's great for what I mentioned but if you have to or expect to carry more, then you need a bigger bag.
I am very happy with this bag.

It will be perfect to take on planes. It will hold all my personal items plus my prescription medications. I'm very satisfied and would highly recommend it to anyone wanting a sturdy, roomy carryall.

I bought this bag to be used as a rugged carry- on bag for airline flights. It arrived quickly and was just as advertised in the L.L. Bean catalog. They even monagrammed it and got it to me within a week. Great bag and I continue to be impressed with L.L. Bean and its products.

I have a leather Kenneth Cole messenger bag and wanted something lighter for summer. This defnately suits my needs. Has plenty of room and enough separate areas to handle all my junk.

Bought this for my husband. Very durable. Pockets are not to deep. I find many messenger type packs are so deep everything gets lost. This is really perfect. Nice leather and canvas. Lots of room. Really 4 outside pockets and two inside (one main one and a small zipper one) You get what you pay for. Worth the $

Rated 5 out of 5 by MidwestBen Typical L.L. Bean - Fantastic!
I've owned many L.L. Bean products over the years, most recently a duffel bag and now this messenger bag; they have ALL been outstanding and this is no exception. I ordered it in British Khaki, the color is perfect and just as it appears on the website. The materials are also very, very good quality with the canvas being durable yet soft, and the leather being very nice as well. The canvas is thick enough to provide some structure, which I thought was a big plus. The interior is fully lined with soft cotton, which is something that the pictures don't really show. Another nice feature that surprised me was the buckle. You can adjust the leather strap or undo it completely if you want, and once you adjust it to your liking, there is a metal clasp which prevents you from needing to undo the leather strap every time you want to open the bag. Not too bad, 'Bean!
Regarding the size, for my needs it was perfect (the dimensions listed on the website seem to be accurate). To put it in perspective, I have a 13" computer that I bring to and from work everyday, which I keep in a neoprene sleeve, and it fits in the bag wonderfully. Not too snug and not too loose, so it doesn't get tossed around inside the bag. My old bag was sized for a 13" computer and I found it to be a bit too small, so this is a nice step up. You could probably fit a computer with a 15"-16" screen, but I don't know about anything larger than that. Even with a computer inside, there is easily enough room for a book, a tablet, a snack, some water, and whatever else you might want to throw in. The velcro pockets on either end measure about 5"x6" and are the perfect size for a computer charger, which is what I use it for. All in all, this bag gets 11/10 from me, and a definite recommendation!
