I tried lighting this fatwood with a match 3 times. It would not catch on at all! I used it as kindling WITH paper and it caught on, but not in place of paper and kindling as described.

I've used fatwood to start the fire in our wood stove for many years. I used to use LL Bean's but last year they ran out early, so I ordered elsewhere, That was very good fatwood. Seeing it back at LL Bean i just ordered a 25 lb. box. This wood is not the same quality as previous Bean fatwood or the fatwood I ordered elsewhere. I think it's too young, too green, perhaps it needed to age at the producers. BTW, it comes from Honduras...and not the USA, or even Canada. The insert says 2 sticks will light the fire easily, not so. Like the other review, even if you help it with newspaper, the paper burns and the fatwood just sits there, then burns out without lighting the logs; and we use kiln-dried high quality aged wood (from Maine).
If you order, keep it a year before using, maybe it will improve. And just order a small quantity in order to judge for yourself. One doesn't "return" fatwood.

A year ago I bought a 35 lb box of fat wood which has lasted me almost a year. The thickness of the pieces was slim and 2 could be put in the wood stove to start a fire.
My box was getting low so I ordered a 25 lb box as the 35 lb boxes had been sold out. The thickness of the pieces was about 3 times as wide. The fire caught more slowly and did not burn as well. In a few months I had used up most of the 25 lb box.
I don't know if llbean changed the vendor but I am far less happy with the cut of the second box of wood. LL, please return to the slimmer cuts of this wood.

We have ordered fatwood from L L Bean for several years. It has enough sap in it to be able to start a fire without having to use paper or other kindling. You usually don't have to use very much either. So it becomes economical in the long run. We use our wood burning stove almost every day in the winter. It helps to keep the cost of heating our home down. Thank you L L Bean for carrying this product.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LovinLifeInAlaska Fatwood is a must have for Alaskan winters!
We live in Alaska. Not in the far north where lows are -60 or more. But still, we expect -25 to -35 for the usual low range for at least a couple of months. Right now, mid-February, temp is 17. Mild but not terribly cold, but not warm either.
We heat with wood. Birch, which holds water if not well dried. Makes it hard to get a fire going when you have no other option for wood, like this year. Believe me, we swear by Fatwood and will use nothing else. Nothing else works. Products with paraffin are not advised for use with our wood stove due to the catalytic converter. And anyway why would you want to? And LL Bean is the only place t buy this product, their free shipping makes it possible.
Thank you LL Bean!!!!! Great product, great customer care policies.
I am ordering 2 more boxes as we speak!!

Having grown up and lived in the South for over 50 years, I think I can speak with some certainty that this product is worth every penny. For most of my life, I had to wander the woods searching for old pine stumps or old rotted fence posts made from pine in order to get this stuff. Then you had to chop it up and haul it out. Now I just stop by the Freeport store once a year and buy a box. If you use 2-3 sticks of this with 5-6 small pieces of dried wood (I use old wood pallets that have been cut to small sizes), then you have yourself a great fire.

First time ordered it was wonderful. Second time mostly good wood not all. Third time half good and half just would not light. It still helps greatly to get a fire going. I just ordered again but going small and we will see how this turns out.

Rated 5 out of 5 by LennyT Best firestarter
This fatwood makes the best firestarters - been using this fatwood in the 35 lb boxes for several years now and we've found them to be the best quality. We've tried other other fatwood and they haven't been as good but they sure were more expensive! Starting a fire in the fireplace is really simple - only a few sticks will start the fire for sure since they burn bright and hot.
