Rated 5 out of 5 by pyromaniac Fatwood 25lb box
I am not sure what all the fuss is about. I have been using llbean fatwood for years and this year I ordered my 2 boxes early. They were fine and are working great as usual. I usually buy the 25 lb boxes.
Since it got cold earlier than usual this year, I am ordering another box to finish the year and start next year. Think I'll try the 35 lb box this time. I burn a lot of hedge in the wood stove and it takes 3-4 pieces of fatwood to get it started, so 2 boxes usually lasts a couple of months. I wouldn't go without my llbean fatwood!

Dear LL Bean,
I've been buying these fire starters for years. Last year, I was disappointed in them because they seemed difficult to light. I thought it was just a bad year or that I received a bad batch. This year's batch is even worse and I've already burned up a brand new fireplace lighter trying to get these to burn. I'm not sure what is going on but in the past, I received pieces of pine pitch that would light very quickly. This year, the wood has very little odor and I even wonder if it's pine at all. Please contact your source and let them know that they are not providing quality starters. It seems to me that I get about 10 good sticks per large box. Something is rotten in the state of Denmark!
My suggestion to everyone else is to wrap your fire starters in a wad of paper and light. If you have old candle wax lying around, add a small piece of that to your paper-stick bundle. Merry Christmas everyone!

Make sure you have enough kindling wood to light this fat wood. I've bought this product in past years with no problem, this years quality is awful! Does not light, don't waste your money

Bought these last year and still have half the box left for this year. Winter is coming fast in Wisconsin and these are great to get the fire going. I only use 2 or 3 at a time. this don't burn too quick so you can hold them and light different areas at a time.
I have a fireplace inside the house so, I would not recommend cooking marshmallows over them. wait an hour or so when the stick is completely gone and your fire is going good with non treated wood.

Just bought another 35 lb box. My last box lasted 2 years using 1-2 sticks per wood stove fire set up. No fusing with paper or paraffin starters. Love the free shipping.

Every year I come back and pick up another box of Ll Bean Fatwood. This stuff is great, I use it for my wood stove as well as my grill, and you just can't find a better bulk buy anywhere! Oh and gotta love the free shipping too!
Thanks Ll Bean

I ordered this Honduran 'fatwood' after trying some given to me by a friend. He used it to kindle his wood stove, and a box lasted him 3 years.
I run two wood stoves for 5-6 months every year. Normally, I harvest my own 'pitch wood' to use as fire starters. But to gather as much wood as is in this 25# box would take an entire summer.
The batch I received from L.L. Bean was excellent. The sticks lit like a candle with a single wooden match.
Normally, I need to keep the door to one of my stoves slightly ajar for ventilation to get the standard kindling going. With this 'fatwood', I can light 2 sticks, add 2-3 pieces of kindling, load the stove, close the door and walk away.
I'm very satisfied with how much work this wood will save me, both in gathering my own, and splitting mountains of kindling.

I was very disappointed with the quality of this fatwood. Before I bought this, I'd been using the remains of an old tree by my house, had purchased some from a woodcutter, and also bought some from a hardware store. All of them lit very well and helped keep things going like an armload of kindling. I have found the LL Bean fatwood really disappointing. It is difficult to get started, has a fragile flame that is extinguished with the smallest breath of air, and just doesn't do the trick the way the other types of fatwood have in the past. For me it has almost been the same as a small piece kindling. I won't be buying this next year.

i must admit, it was many years from my last use of flatwood, however, i seem to recall the fatwood lighting easier and quicker.
am purchasing again, so it must be ok overall.

Cavemen used fatwood and I just found out about it a few years ago. So easy to use and one to two sticks will start a fire. Of course you'll need more if your wood is wet. It comes from Central America because the U.S. has nearly wiped out the longleaf pine. I was surprised to find this at L.L. Bean and at a very good price.
