I found the gloves awkward for a woman's smaller hands but adequate for the purpose.
The gloves are of a very heavy duty material so I anticipate being able to use them for years to com.

My wife and I bought a pair of these many moons ago for our home. Our daughter just moved into her own home with its own wood burning stove and the first thing "Dad" saw was a potential accident. So to L.L. Bean I went. These are great gloves. My own pair must be nearly 20 years old and are still fine. I have used them not only for my wood burning stove and my fireplace but out in my garden when I've had bonfires. They are that durable!

I can touch my fireplace without burning myself! The downside is I still don't know if my fireplace is hot or not. Everyone should wear a pair.

Rated 4 out of 5 by JillyBean1 Great quality, short is long enough, bulky
These seem to be of great quality and should last many years. I had a cheaper, thinner "fireman's" knockoff that started to wear through after about 5 years. I did prefer that the older pair was a little slimmer and more fitted to my small hands; this pair is a little bulky, especially at the fingertips, which can make them somewhat cumbersome. But I'm getting used to it and they are breaking in. I agree with some of the other reviewers that these should be solid dark-colored leather; the tan portion is already marked up with charcoal. The short length is plenty long for reaching into a woodstove from the front or top.

Rated 5 out of 5 by exengineer Very safe for handling a wood stove
These gloves are very well built, feel very comfortable - not stiff like some other gloves I have had. I have a wood stove and fireplace - using these gloves primarily to load wood in the stove. Even with a hot fire in the stove, hands do not feel the heat.
Just one suggestion - wish the gloves were also available in a smaller size. My wife's hands are smaller and she finds them a little too big.

These gloves work great. I can move burning logs around without feeling any heat at all. They also look fantastic. I used to hide my old gloves but I keep these out (I got the green).

Bought these based on many reviews. Wanted something that could handle the heat if a log fell from the fireplace. My husband says they're great. His son (who's a fire-fighter) says they're good ones. So I trust if we have an emergency, they'll do the job.

Rated 5 out of 5 by kalmiadog Sturdy and well made
These gloves are well insulated and feel as if they will last a long time. They are very big on my small woman's hands, but I find that I don't need much finger articulation to handle logs for the wood stove. They work just fine to protect my hands from burns and splinters. They are a bit stiff but will probably become more flexible with use. The gloves are long enough to cover about two thirds of my forearms, preventing burns from the side of the wood stove opening.

Only withheld "excellent" because not enough time has passed since the purchase; I don't know how they'll last. But they are exactly as advertised and I only wonder why I waited so long to replace the old ones.

I have no idea where I got my first set of fireplace gloves many years ago - they were awesome. Then marketers started calling anything that looked like a glove a "fireplace glove'. Meaning, wear it while to use a poker or bbq and your hands won't burn. To me a fireplace glove is a glove that you can legitimately grab red hot burning logs or coals and relocate them without burning the gloves or your hands. The ensuing gloves I owned were garbage -- ten second flicks at most before extreme heat penetrated the fingers.. These gloves are TRUE fireplace gloves. I actually stuck my hand directly into a bed of extremely hot almond wood coals - and moved them around. The that does come through in about 30 seconds, however it really is not advisable to go that extreme. I have used them continuously to adjust burning logs, pick up hot embers, etc... these are TRUE fireplace gloves!
