Rated 4 out of 5 by FrankIII Love 'em but sizing and/or drawstring has changed
My experience EXACTLY mirrors the review from April 29, 2013. I've been wearing mediums for many years for running (including a marathon) , occasional swimming, or all-day weekend wear. Love the roominess, closeable back pocket for my wallet, and fast dry. I purchased mediums in October, 2014 and they were too big for me. I wear 31" waist pants, sometimes 32". In trying to cinch them up, it didn't work well with puckered material (imagine a burlap bag with a rope around it) . I compared them to my previous pair from 2012 and they were bigger - a 1" longer waist flat on the ground which translates to a 2" bigger waist. LL Bean customer service is surprised because the supplier has not changed in that time - but something has. My guess is that sizing is bigger at least on the medium, and possibly the draw string mechanism has been cheapened. If you are on the high end of the size range of the mediums, you probably won't have a problem. LL Bean- I hope you can figure out what has changed.

Rated 2 out of 5 by txsenior Supplex shorts
I have purchased many items of LLB apparel over the years and have most always been very satisfied. Not so with these shorts, which are disappointing. Yes there is a drawstring but the elastic in the waist is almost non existent and provides no support. The so-called liner is flimsy and baggy, serving no purpose. Overall the shorts are premium priced but of a quality you would expect to find at your local big discounter. I will keep the pair I have but will not buy another.

These shorts are not running shorts at all. They are hot and do not wick moisture anywhere. The get wet and stick to your leg. when I finished a simple 5 mile run I looked like I wet myself! Ok short for water activities but do not buy as a running short!

by Kleeble Faded Classic Supplex Sport Short 8"
I bought my husband the Cobalt Map Medium Classic Supplex Sport Short 8" Leaf Print Men's at the end of 2012. He likes the length being 6'4" tall. However, he has been swimming in a lower chlorine salt water pool, rinsing them each time, yet the trunks have bleached nearly white. (See photo.) They should be labeled 'not for pool swimming'. How about making some chlorine resistant swim trunks for men L.L. Bean?

My husband uses these for the hot tub and pool. They fit great. He likes the shorter length. The back pocket is a nice feature to have if we're going to the beach. The elastic waistband is indeed comfortable! Definitely buying him another pair.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Smartshopper75 supplex classic sport shorts/6" - for tennis
I have been using these shorts for years playing tennis. Pockets are deep and can hold several balls at practice. Shorts are durable and quick drying. Never had a problem with fading, sizing or inablility to keep tightly adjusted around the waist as some have noted.

by Michigander95 They really do fade!
I usually take reviews with a grain of salt, but since the fading problem was repeated over and over, I should have heeded them this time!
I purchased these swim trunks in black in the 6" and 8" inseam when they were on sale.
I guess I didn't fully believe all the reviews that mentioned how quickly they fade. After wearing the 6" inseam trunks for lap swimming (~3days/week), the black has faded to a washed out pinkish color, after only a few weeks. I had a similar pair of a 'swim company' brand that I purchased at my local warehouse/club store that didn't fade after over 1-2yrs, I only replaced those when the elastic wore out. Needless to say I am returning the unworn 8" pair. It is a shame, since these fit great and I love the soft feel of the supplex fabric. I guess these just weren't made for pool swimming. I'll keep using the washed-out pair for lap swimming, but I will remember to look elsewhere for a swimsuit in the future.

I never even got to the drawstring issue mentioned by a few reviewers because
1. The inseam is NOT 6 inches--more like 5 to 5 1/4 inches (too short for me)
2. The legs are way too baggy.
I have some of these shorts from a year or two ago, and these aren't up to that level by a long shot. The inconsistency in manufacture in items with the same item name is a real problem.

Rated 5 out of 5 by TheRocketMan Worth the money -- Lasts a long time.
I've just purchased two MORE pairs of the LL Bean supplex gym shorts. I've been wearing these to the gym, plus hiking and other activities, for years. Take 'em to the beach, too. All told, I'm wearing a pair of these probably 5+ times per week.
I take care of my clothing and all of my pairs have lasted a good long time.
About a year ago, I discovered that size L was suddenly too large. (Hah !!! All of that time spent at the gym is worth something !!)
So I purchased several pairs in size medium and they fit great and are just as durable. I just got 2 more pairs 'cuz I'm not too keen on doing laundry all the time.
My old size L were in great shape and I donated 'em to my local 2nd hand store and likely someone else is getting good use out of 'em.

I agree completely with the previous review which stated that the drawstring did not work properly. I bought these for my husband; fit was fine, but the waistband becomes too loose when the suit is wet. The drawstring does NOTHING to help adjust the waistband. I've been sewing all my life, and I tried to make the adjustment myself to the elastic in the waistband. Opened a seam in the back - wouldn't work. No adjustment can be made. So... elastic and drawstring are not well done on this suit. Other than that, the suit would have been fine!
