I haven't gotten a chance to test out my first (and possibly last) pair of Bean Boots in any sort of wintry conditions as I ordered them right as they went on backorder. But, the sizing direction seems to be spot on and I look forward to many snowy days shoveling and walking the dog in these (assuredly) warm and dry boots.

I wanted to wait a full season before writing a review, and these boots have exceeded my expectations. They are definitely worth the steep price tag. They work great as a late fall, back woods hiking boot and will keep your feet warm in cold temperatures. I would NOT recommend these boots for use in the coldest part of winter if you plan on being outside for hours at a time. However, they are a great winter boot for casual nights out and keeping your feet warm and fitting comfortably in your jeans, w/o the bulkiness of a fully insulated pair of winter boots. Where these boots have really shined, is during late winter/early spring. The early rains have arrived, snow is melting, puddles of water and ice are everywhere, the soil is muddy, but the temperature is still in the upper 20's to lower 30's. Rain boots are not warm enough, but these will keep your feet warm and dry. If you live above the 40 degree line of latitude, BUY THESE BOOTS!

Rated 4 out of 5 by ScrappleAndEggs Extremely comfortable and good fit
These boots are lighter than my 6 inch waterproof timberlands extremely comfortable if you don't mind the additional time tying up the laces. I wear a size 10 in dress shoes/size 10.5 in sneakers and I ordered a size 9 as suggested. With the Goretex/Thinsulate liner, the fit is just right with dress or medium weight hiking socks with the liner acting a bit like a sock as well. It (the liner) is attached via velcro at the top rear of the boot and tends to want to come off when taking off my boots, or trying to insert my foot into the boot. But once they are on, I can wear them all day. I can see that without the liner, heavier weight socks would be needed. Overall, I am very happy with them.

Rated 3 out of 5 by ChicagoSnow14 Better fit without the liner
The 10" Maine Hunting boot with the Thinsulate / Gortex liner looked as good as expected and the 1-size down advice was accurate for the boot but not the liner. It was near impossible to put these boots on the first time with the thinnest socks. Even without socks it was a struggle. The customer service rep at LLBean talked to a product expert and he said I should wear them for a few days and see - hopefully they would stretch to fit. That was not the case as there was no improvement in the fit - I am afraid to tear the liner if I keep trying them on. So I am waiting to receive the boots without the liner and will return the pair I have. This would mean heavier or multiple socks but better than no fit at all.
A solution may be to offer a better fitted liner - perhaps a size 9 W liner would be a good fit in the size 8 W boot.
I had originally wanted a 8 W, 8 " Main hunting boot (darker brown leather) with the liner - I was told those were no longer made. Alternatively the 8" or 10" with only the Thinsulate may be a better choice than the bare boot alone. This winter in Chicago has made me analyze this issue more than it deserves.
This is the first product review I have ever written anywhere. I did so because of the attention and sensitivity of the two women I spoke to when I called customer service. They were exceptionally kind and extremely helpful and took all the time to make sure my concerns were addressed. I am sorry I do not have their names but LLBean is lucky to have them. And you have lived up to your promise of excellent customer service after the sale!

Rated 5 out of 5 by Bowjoehunter perfect fit out of the box
I was looking for a pair of boots to take on a wyoming elk hunt where you need good comfortable boots to cover the 10 miles a day you'll be doing and I wanted a soft soled boot for quiet stalking too. These boots are just what I was looking for. They are sized large so take llbeans suggestion if you are like me (8.5 sized foot) go with a smaller size. I thought I might have to break in the boots but these were good to go right out of the box. I've been walking upto 7 miles with no issues. You will need good knee height moisture wicking wool socks to use for stand hunting below 30 degrees but I've used for walking at 12-20 degrees and feet were toasty warm. Great boots worth the money!

Rated 5 out of 5 Well built boots
Boots came out of the box already soft and a little broken in which surprised me. Extremely comfortable and fit me perfect, I have a size 13 foot. Only thing I didn't like was the insert, it just didn't fit my style of foot I guess. I replaced with a gel insert and feel like I am wearing sneakers. I am sure I will have these boots for many years.

I followed Beans sizing guide lines and the fit is perfect. I can also wear extra socks during colder weather. I have not had problems with the liner coming out of the boot when the boots are removed. They are exactly what I was looking for in a rubber bottom boot and I wished I had ordered these sooner than I did this year.

My newly purchased boots are exactly like my 10 years old pair and I still wear these after hundreds of hours and miles. All the stitches that join leather and rubber are still tight, Gore-Tex liner gets a little damp on the bottom with 100% submersion in water, they were waterproof for years. They are the most comfortable boot I own. So much wear on old boots the rubber bottoms have cracked and worn through where the steel shank ends. These boots are warm but not meant for sitting in 20F degree cold for hours. Should have bought new pair before now but these boots still feel so good I kept putting it off. Buy these boots if you are looking for a comfortable, waterproof, reasonably warm walking/hunting boot, they are a bargain. Follow LL Bean sizing directions and you won't go wrong.
