I was looking for replacements for very old, worn editions of this Wool, 'ragg' sock - and was gifted a pair. Sorry folks, but this is NOT the same performing sock of past years. The size shrinkage is terrible and the 'weight' - 'thickness' of the weave is nothing close to what I'm trying to replace. This one won't be my choice.
If it matters, I use the heavy, wool ragg sock with Red Wing work/walking boots and always use a +/- thin cotton sock underneath. Your mileage may vary, but the combo has always worked for me. I depend upon the coarse weave to provide a a comfortable cushion. These 'new' ones do not have the heft to provide the padding and comfort that I need for a working over-sock. And, as others have noted, the shrinkage is terrible, far more than expected - and promised. The only reason that I considered these was that the older ones were badly worn - the heals are giving out and the bare threads provide no comfort. (Still, not bad for many years of service from ~10 pair. Sorry, but this replacement sock is not even close to the original and it shrinks too much, even when hand-washed and air-dried. I'm going to ask LLB to suggest a better replacement for my worn out ragg socks. With 30+ choices, I cannot figure it out. In the end, this specific sock gets only One Star and these comments. I won't pay $18-420 for this model. I hope that the 'experts' at LLB come up with a better suggestion.

I have been wearing these socks from LL Bean for over 40 years-mainly the 12"( and 16" that they used to carry). These stocked now shrink beyond belief. I wear large and the 6 pairs I bought recently(at Christmas) would barely fit a small child after a few washes. I am hugely disappointed and also upset to hear that the cotton ragg version has now been discontinued. The 100% exchange policy is great but I would prefer to get the information that these are differently sized before I order. Having read some reviews I see I am not alone.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Chef99 Nice heavy warm socks but...
Within less than two months I had holes in the heels of each pair! LLBean was wonderful about sending replacements along with a return slip for me to ship the "holey" ones back to them...easy just put in nearby UPS drop off box. The customer service person I spoke with told me this was a product they have carried for years without problems which is why I decided to "recommend to a friend" and give 4 stars because withstanding the holes they are warm, thick socks I really like. As usual it was a pleasure to deal with customer service! I have always had pleasant, helpful people on the other end of the line whenever I call...not too often now that we can order so easily on line.

I really like these socks. They do there job in keeping my feet warm and dry. I've tried similar thick wool socks that had a roughness to them, but these that LL Bean offer are quite soft. Having to wear them for long periods outdoors this winter, I find them very comfortable.

I just wrote an unfavorable review on these socks and want to correct it. I said 9" height advertized. I should have said 10 ", being really 9".

These socks are too short in height. Unless one pulls hard on them they are not the 9" height advertized and even then they settle back to about the 8" they really are. Washing accentuates the problem. They also stand out from my leg. In general, they just don't look good on with too much leg showing and are not comfortable. Sorry I bought them.

I initially bought them for my husband because of his cold feet but he thought they were too bulky...so I took them & absolutely love them. They are warm & very confortable; washable...Great!!

I have been diagnosed with chilblains--no, its not just Victorian heroines who complain of it. My dr. said to wear wool socks until it's 65 outside. I immediately went to LLBean online and ordered the thickest pair I could find. These wool socks are so soft--I was afraid they would be scratchy, but they aren't at all. Such happy, warm feet now.

Rated 2 out of 5 by MORBIUS VERY SMALL XL
I HAVE BEEN BUYING THESE RAGG WOOL SOCKS FOR 40 YEARS, BUT NOW WHOEVER MAKES THEM FOR LL BEAN SHOULD USE A SIZING CHART FROM THE USA.
THEY ARE THE SMALLEST XL SOCKS I HAVE EVER SEEN,ABOUT HALF THE SIZE OF MY OLDER RAGG WOOL SOCKS FROM LL BEAN.
I GUESS I HAVE TO KEEP MY OLD ONES IN GOOD REPAIR, UNTILL THEY CHANGE THEIR SUPPLIER.

The socks are the right color, and I like the fact that they?re thick. Good product... except the sizing is all wrong. I?m 5?6? and take a size 8 shoe. The first time I ordered I asked for medium. They started out tight, shrunk a bit and ended up too tight. Next time I ordered large and they too ended up too tight. Finally I got extra large. Extra large for someone my size? I never before ordered any kind of clothing in extra large. These look like they?ll work, and that?s good, but the last time I put on a pair of large my back went out. It?s still out. It would be nice if other people don?t have to go through this much.
