Rated 1 out of 5 by Walker2014 "machine washable" wool should NOT shrink, ever
Hi. I knit and am familiar with wool. I buy machine washable wool and it NEVER, EVER shrinks no matter how many washes it goes through. I submit that this wool here is adulterated in some way, which causes it to shrink. LLBean should look into this, since customers should NOT have to come up with ways to avoid shrinkage ie. buying huge sizes or not washing them at all. Again, truly machine washable wool will not shrink. Not ever.

Rated 1 out of 5 by LLbean99 Yay, I got a hole in one!
One wear, one wash, one hole. Right at the seam. I've never had this happen with any sock before so this item deserves a 1 star rating for that alone.
However, they also itch. A lot!
I'm sticking with Smart Wool.

I love these socks. I buy them in an XL (I'm female and wear size 7.5 shoe). I mainly wear them around the house because my feet are always cold. I get XL, because after washing, they obviously shrink a bit. These socks are way too thick for me to wear w/ any pair of shoes I own.. Only good for indoor use or use with slightly oversized rain/snow boots in cold weather. As a kid, I used to wear these w/ my beans boots to shovel snow. Now I'm in CA, I just wear them around the house to keep my piggies warm. They are not itchy at all, and they last a long time, even with frequent washings. Highly recommend. Only wish they'd start making them in some new colors, or bring back the solid red and navy colors.

I bought a pair of Ragg socks in Norway many years ago when I was there for a skiing event. The seller told me that the Norwegians never washed them instead they wore a liner. I bought thin cotton liner socks that I washed after each wearing. I only washed my ragg socks about once a season (for about forty years) in cold water and drying on a sock stretcher. Those socks lasted until now (with absolutely no odor).
I will treat this pair the same way and I'm sure they will last the rest of my life. If not Bean will hear from me!

Rated 4 out of 5 by woolie Ragg wool sock
I ordered the Rustic Red thinking I would receive two different color variations, but both socks were as pictured, the varied light gray and dark wool sock with a dark red top and the two yellow stripes near the top. I'm good with that. More important, I had purchased the Ragg Wool socks for years but had stopped purchasing them because of size/ shrinkage problems. I decided to try the socks again but purchased size XL, which is intended to be for size 13 - 15 .I am size 9 and the latest size I have was a L (9-12), which has shrunk to be tight and they were a replacement for an older blue pair that had shrunk so much that they were unwearable). I wash in warm water and line dry all my wool socks. The XL socks are great for me but definitely would be tight for someone with the size foot shown by LLB. I really like these socks but recommend them only with the disclaimer that ordering one or even two sizes larger is necessary.

I have purchased these socks for about 20 years and would not wear any other. I wear them year round and alternate between the 12" and 10", summer included. They keep my feet dry in all types of weather and keep my feet cool, even in summer. I recommend them to anyone who asks and will not purchase another brand. They also last a long time. Want a comfortable sock that you not regret purchasing? THIS is the one you want to buy. I still have four pair but will buying two more this week.

Rated 1 out of 5 by WalterWindchill Way too small!
Bean' sizing chart says size L fits shoe size 9 - 12. I wear size 10 shoes. Socks are too small -- even before washing. I regret not having read the negative reviews before ordering.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Woodman70 Holes after 5 days
LLB should now send me these socks free since I have probably bought at least 20 pairs in last 5 years. Why so many? They develop holes in the heels after about 5 wearings. No exaggeration here. But otherwise I love the socks since they are comfortable and adapt to the weather--warm in winter and not hot in summer. I am allergic to wool but these do not itch; well maybe a little before the first washing.
But DO NOT place them in the dryer. They will shrink 20 % or more.
So what to do? Just put the cost in my budget, unless LLB comes through for me. Thank you.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ChrisAndMilena Best gift for college kids
My college age son is in the "not wearing cloths my parents buying me" stage and was been for some time. Nevertheless, he wears holes in these socks. I been wearing them for years and buying them for them since he could fit in them. They are very comfortable, warm and great quality. Perfect for kids that stomp are campus in the snow wearing tennis shoe. lol

Who writes a review of socks!? This girl. I am obsessed with these socks. You should have seen the joy on my face when they arrived in the mail. I have an extremely old pair of LLBean Ragg Wool socks that were my mom's (pretty sure I stole them from her, don't say anything), but they had worn straight through the heel. I ordered the two pack of these guys, and even though the shipping was delayed, it was well worth the wait! These are so soft and warm and cozy! I am always freezing in the winter here in NYC and along with the wool leggings from Bean's, my life is much, much toastier. I know some products from Bean's have gone down in quality over the years (can you tell I grew up in Maine?) but these remain true to the real quality LL Bean's name carries! I love these socks and I wish I had a million pairs of them.
