Poor construction. I wouldn't have trusted it not to break from the torque of a 2 hp, 2 stroke outboard. I had to return it.

I got this item in less than a week and although I haven't used it yet I think it will work great,it's well made.

Purchased the Back Country square stern canoe from Bean. Have a 2.5 hp 4 cycle outboard and wanted to mount a small 24lb thrust trolling motor. I fly fish. The Bean motor mount is not wide enough for what I want. It is clearly designed for a traditional double ended canoe. The mount itself is very sturdy and well made. The design is simple which equates to engineering excellence to me. If you have access to a table saw, repairs should be no problem. Think that a little sanding and spar varnishing will give you a lifetime product. My problem is beam width of my canoe. It's wider than the mount can handle.

Tried this on a 17' grumman canoe with 2.5HP Suzuki outboard. The bolts start bending at low throttle, scary bend at full. This may be good for a small electric motor, but is certainly not 4HP.

Great motor mount! We reversed the bolts and washers and wing nuts, making it easier to access and tighten the wing nuts from the top when the motor mount is attached to the canoe.

Rated 4 out of 5 by MousamPaul Sturdy and serviceable
The motor mount is well-made and has worked well in the two times I've used it so far.
I'm using it with a 40 lb thrust Minn Kota trolling motor on my 13' Merrimack Osprey canoe. It mounts well using the front seat as the helm, which is what I wanted to do for better balance when using the canoe for trolling when alone. There is not enough room behind the rear seat to mount it there when I go out with a second person. I haven't tried it with my 17' Mad River Explorer, but I suspect it would fit behind the rear seat there, but be too narrow to fit when using the front seat for helm.
Find it best to mount with wing nuts on top where I can easily check tightness.
Block on which motor is actually mounted is barely wide enough to accommodate my motor clamps, as it leaves perhaps 1/4" on each side. I'd feel safer if it were a bit wider and had something on the two outer edges to prevent the mounting clamps from slipping off. So far I'm just very careful attaching the motor, plus I tie a safety line around the motor to tie it to my seat. Nonetheless I don't feel comfortable shifting to top speed, which gives a sudden jolt, since speed 5 gives significantly more thrust than the 4 setting.
Overall I'll be thrilled if the mount holds up over time. I love the set-up I have.

Rated 1 out of 5 by Hutley Broke on first use
I purchased this for use on an 18' Old Town Canoe using a 2.3hp Honda 4-stroke outboard. It broke on first bit of throttle up even though it is rated for 4hp. I tried to tighten the bolts holding the bracket to the x-member but they spun in place. This may work using a small eletric motor, something under 36 lbs of thrust but was useless with the motor I have.

Rated 3 out of 5 by LouT Doesn't fit all canoes.
Good value and construction but required modification to fit my Mad River Adventure 14 canoe, I had to add 5 inch bolts and replace the lower support board ( too short). I doubt if I would have found any other. Havent finished yet.

I Don't expect to use the motor mount any time sound. I bought it as a Christmas gift. It looks fine and I expect it will work well. The purchase and delivery were "swift and painless. John

This is a decent mount, although the transom board is VERY narrow and my Minn Kota barely fits with both mounting clamp contacts reaching the edge of both sides. This gives little margin for error if the mount slips in either direction. As well, the lower wooden piece is thinner than the rest, and the wood seems fairly light.
I love LL Bean and am a life-long customer, but I don't think this product is durable in the long-term. It's definitely not worth $50, so I will be retuning for refund.
Still, if you can overlook these issues and the high price for 3 pieces of wood and a few bolts, note that this is a left-hand mount, so if you're used to piloting with your right hand, it's not an option with this side-mount version.
