Rated 5 out of 5 by tractorchick A "must" for traveling
My husband and I just arrived home from a month trip to Australia and New Zealand. We each have on of these bags. This makes traveling and living out of a bag so easy. With the compartments I was able to easily find my clothes, especially those tricky black socks!
After numerous assaults by the airline baggage handlers, the bags arrived unscathed and looking like new. They are tough, light weight, and have great rollers.

Rated 4 out of 5 by WalterR Bean Comes Thru Again
I bought this about two years ago for my college age grand-son. It's been used but not all that much. Recently I noticed that there were seams coming loose. LLBean to the rescue. One phone call and a replacement was shipped out & the box it came in was what I used to return the original bag.
When a company stands behind their well designed product if a not-quite-right one slips through quality control, how can you not recommend its purchase to who ever will listen.

Rated 4 out of 5 by Desertrailrnr Missing one feature
This arrived remarkably fast on my doorstep after I ordered it to come via express shipping. A real plus. The fabric seems durable, the look is terrific, and the construction seems solid. My only but significant complaint is that only one compartment has "kissing" zippers that permit me to use a lock. The two end compartments, the drop bottom compartment and the side compartment do not have kissing zippers. I've purchased 2 more flexible cable small locks and now can attach an end compartment to the side compartment as well as similarly lock the two facing zippers for the drop bottom. But one compartment will be totally unlocked. It seems for hardly any additional cost or none at all one could add kissing zippers for all compartments.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ReynardCA Eight years of faithful service
I've had mine for so long I can't remember for sure when I got it, but I think 2006. It's been on eight trips to Mongolia, literally to the Gobi and around a good part of the rest of the Land of Blue Skies. (Taken to England and Romania this past May.) Thrown around in back of Russian vans and Land Cruisers, dragged in and out of tents, carried backpack style by drivers, survived baggage handing year after year.
It has finally reached the end of the line. The fabric on the bottom of one corner has torn loose and has a split on another, the metal part of the hardside bottom zipper has torn loose from the fabric edge on one corner, the pull-out handle sometimes doesn't, some stitching has broken where the carry straps go under the leather strips. I go to Mongolia for seven weeks at a time and need my main duffle to be utterly reliable, so while those don't sound serious and could possibly be repaired, the wear and tear will continue to add up until something fails and I'm stuck.
The hard side bottom is essential for things like art supplies, GPS, small tripod, extra travel packs of kleenex, headlamp, first aid kit, all kind of odds and ends and stuff that need to be checked like my Swiss Army knife, extra shampoo and conditioner. It's all easy to get to. Clothes go in the top and side pockets, all seven weeks worth.
So I'm really happy to see that after all this time, LL Bean still makes this gear bag. I'll be getting another one to replace the old one.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CALLBeanEnthusiast Great for College Traveler
This was a birthday present for our grandson, in his third year of college. He wanted something that would travel well, look good for years, and complement his other travel gear. This fits the bill. The color is really good and the suggested color for the monogram really makes the whole package look great.

Rated 5 out of 5 by NancyB7518 Very Nice, Classic Bag
I am a big fan of rolling drop bottom duffel bags and traveled all over the world with my last one from another manufacturer. This bag is very roomy and could easily accommodate a 2-3 week trip. The drop bottom is extremely useful for storing shoes, boots, sweaters, jackets that you don't need everyday because it is a completely separate compartment from the main, much larger compartment. It is also good for putting dirty clothes and shoes (I used it for riding boots on international horse-riding trips). Note that this drop bottom is not so good for putting things you don't want to get wrinkled because the handle mechanism is underneath a fabric cover so the bottom of the bag is not flat.
This bag is very nicely styled with leather trim. I got the monogram, a nice touch that also helps avoid luggage mix-ups in baggage claim. The material of the bag seems very tough and the handle mechanism seems smooth and strong. I have not used the bag but other reviewers have said it is durable over many trips.
The top compartment sides are not stiff enough for the bag to remain open with nothing in it, so this makes packing a little bit more awkward. However, the benefit of this design is that the bag folds flat when empty and could easily be stored under a bed.
The bag has two large compartments at either end that could fit a toiletry bag or shoes. There is also a long shallow zipped pocket along the front of the bag.
This is a bag I look forward to using on my next adventures. I like the classic styling and know it should hold up well for many trips to come!

I travel for work and am usually gone 4 or 5 months at a stretch. This bag fit everything I need to support that. I use the drop bottom for work boots and various casual shoes and place any liquids in there for the extra protection the hard frame provides coupled with the layered clothing above. I generally pack just under the airline limit preferring only one checked bag when I travel.
I don't think the stand-up feature would work if I was packed lightly. The feet on that end rely on bag content weight and area to work properly. Fortunately I don't have a light packing situation when I fly so it's only a theory.

Rated 5 out of 5 by Argyle Zimbabwe Safari
Very durable and mobile. Went on 10 day safari to Zimbabwe last month. Took a backpack (carry on), gun case (checked), and the Sportsman's Rolling Gear Bag (checked). Now I travel light (for a safari), and my PH's commented on this. But this was large enough to cover all my needs. I had my clothes, toiletries, extra shoes, ammo case, and soft gun case in the Sportsman's Rolling Gear Bag. It was stuffed, but did the job. The bottom compartment I used for shoes and dirty clothes on the trip home (nice to separate from the other contents). The camp did daily laundry, which allowed me to take less clothes, otherwise I might have needed another bag. Both side pockets have good size (you can almost fit a pair of running shoes in there, but not quite) It stores pretty flat. I love the look of the bag, and thought it was a great value. Performed great and still looks new after many transfers and a trip to the African Bush.
