LL Bean's Flying Tigers jackets look great, but there are some issues. I have had numerous leather bombers over the years, including LL Bean's (which I unfortunately grew out of, getting the jacket in my mid-late teens as a present#. I ultimately decided NOT to replace my most recent bomber #non-Bean# with one of these. First the good things about these jackets: the lining...from wool, to thinsulate, to uninsulated, you have a lot of variety to make sure you stay comfortable in these jackets, which this jacket is probably the best on the market at giving you a really toasty option with the sherpa wool lining. The bad, and there are two. First, all the cuts and seams to make this jacket. The back is in three pieces, and since the back takes most of the stretch and rub, really one piece works best, or if the back can't be one piece, put the seams at the waist and not at the shoulder. The other bad is price. When I looked to replace my bomber from the late 90's #not a Bean jacket# with a new one recently, I first looked at these Flying Tigers jackets. The Bean guarantee is great, but I paid almost 50% less for a jacket I consider to be higher quality from a manufacturer who I trust just a little less than Bean...and it has a one piece back, and only two seams on each sleeve. My old LL Bean bomber had a one piece back, and that jacket was almost bomb-proof, but after wearing out the seams in my latest #non-Bean# jacket #granted it took 15 years), I'm looking for something with a little better construction. Bring back the one piece back on these jackets and I will be the first in line.

Rated 3 out of 5 by Chiltech Warm Heavy Jacket - fit a bit large
I bought the wool lined fur collared version in the normal brown finish/not distressed. For leather this is a warm jacket and has a heavy sturdy feel. If you like a softer leather you'll like this jacket. It is made of a goatskin which is supposed to be lighter and tougher than cowhide. I am not certain goatskin is usually this soft - this jacket feels more like the softness of modern lambskin dress leather.jackets, on the plus side it is not a thin leather. (I own heavy cowhide leather motorcycle jackets and they are not this soft#.
I returned this jacket for two main reasons, the fit in the shoulders is too wide for me and the appearance didn't quite suit me. The mouton on the collar is very short and the collar looks to me relatively undersized for this large a coat. The brown is more of a darker milk chocolate vs a dark chocolate color and has more of a shiney finish than I like.
I wear a 40-42 jacket #5'7 155lbs) and this jacket in Medium had seam overlap on both shoulders by 1-1.5 " . I don't have small shoulders. Interestingly the sleeves were not too long (I don't have long arms). The sleeves did not hike up when extending my arms which I attribute to the extra shoulder length as this jacket is not articulated in the back. I would recommend this jacket to someone with broad shoulders but not overly long arms.

Rated 5 out of 5 by vetbiker Comfortable, soft leather, very warm, and great fi
The leather is very soft. The jacket fits very well and is comfortable for everyday wearing. The jacket zips and snaps up to the neck. The collar is warm and a scarf is not needed to keep the neck warm.
The jacket was warm in 13 degrees with a wind chill of 3 degrees above zero.

Previous reviewers were correct that the sizing is a bit small, so make sure you check the sizing chart and measure yourself before purchase. I did and am thankful for it.
Previous reviewers were also correct that the collar is a bit high in the back and is a bit stiff, but so were the original jackets. that extra high collar keeps the wind out and the warmth in, so there's a trade-off.
Extremely warm for it's size. Yes, it's heavy, but I bought it for that reason. Looks great with casual clothes or my slacks and ties for work. It's definitely worth the cash.

I bought one of these to replace the L.L Bean model I had from over twenty years ago. I needed a bigger size. Sadly the old, made in U.S.A. jacket was vastly superior to the new imported one. The leather was better and much more supple. The new one is like cardboard in comparison. Also, the fit and finish are worse. To top it all off, the new one cost $150 dollars more. May as well bite the bullet and make one in the U.S. I know that there are many manufactures of high quality American made leather jackets. Many are military contractors who make those jackets available for civilian purchase. Time to do with this one what you have done for wool coats with Sterling.

Nothing really wrong with the jacket but I am sending it back because I thought it was too bulky and the leather looked cheap. The leather is stiff and has a shine to it. It may be fine for others but did not fit my needs.

Ready for the cold months ahead, I am very pleased with this jacket. Quality you would expect from LLBean, true to size, excellent workmanship, and warmth to match what winter has in store for us.

My leather jacket gave up the ghost after years of use. There was no question where I was going to replace it: L.L. Bean. I had tried on other brands and the fit, look and warmth simply did not match that of L.L. Bean's Flying Tiger Wool-Insulated Jacket. I am a big guy so I ordered the XXL and it fits perfectly. Plenty of room for arm movement and I can layer it with sweaters. Simply the best!

Rated 5 out of 5 by bigdeal1 great jacket - great company
this a a high quality and really warm jacket. I usually wear a med. size, but this one never felt comfortable. LL Bean told me to send it back in exchange for a large and it is very warm and comfortable. It's a great jacket and a great company to work with.

Rated 5 out of 5 by WisconsinSlim Excellent, sturdy jacket
I've had my insulated Flying Tiger Jacket for around 5 years and I really like it. It's a roomier jacket than the military spec leather jackets, so it's more comfortable and the seams aren't straining when you wear it. The goat skin leather is very supple and doesn't show blemishes as quickly as steer hide. The indicated temperature range might be a little optimistic, but my jacket gets regular wear at the start and end of our Wisconsin winters. It is well made, stylish, and warm. It also has the good old single direction zipper, which is great.
