I wore this throughout our last Michigan winter and it performed admirably, exceeding all expectations. This jacket is warm--standing up to the coldest winds I encountered. In fact, I rarely even need a sweater under it, but on the coldest days, a down-filled vest makes this impenetrable to the cold. The shearling lining wraps you in a warm coziness but is not bulky and the thinsulate sleeves make for easy arm and shoulder movement. The incredibly soft shearling collar and be worn up or down and when it gets really cold, I make full use of it. The nap-down feature of the collar is also a nice touch. Also, the goatskin leather is soft and flexible.
I also own the uninsulated Flying Tiger and feared that purchasing the wool-insulated version might prove to be a wardrobe redundancy; however, that is not the case at all. Both serve specific functions, temperature being the main determiner of which one I choose on a given day.

Rated 5 out of 5†by KrackerJack Great fit, comfortable & warm!
I love this jacket! It is just slightly snug with the wool lining even though the size is right. It is wonderful in this year's frigid weather and looks great! I've received several complements on it. It is very well made and the fur collar, wool lining and thinsulate really make the outdoors bearable. It is worth the price in my opinion.

Rated 5 out of 5†by WisconsinKansas very warm and comfortable
I was hesitant to spend this kind of money on a coat but with Beans return policy I went ahead and ordered it. It was back ordered and took a little longer than I would have liked. When I received the coat I wasn't sure about the collar and a little bigger size for a Large. I have been wearing the coat in Zero weather and it is great. Very comfortable and the collar keeps my neck nice and warm. I am impressed with the construction this should be a 20 year coat that will just get better year after year. Any of you woman out there looking to buy your husband or boyfriend a later "V-Day" present don't hesitate getting him this coat he should be grateful for years.

Rated 5 out of 5†by aburnett Preferred mouton collar
The jacket in this style that I acquired some 15 or more years ago had a true mouton/fleece collar (more like the Navy G-1 model), much as the original WWII design and no windflap in the outside of the zipper (I believe the original WWIIs had one on the inside...).
The new one that I acquired last year has a beaver- or mink-like "shearling" covered collar brushed to be very soft - it is more comfortable on the odd occasion of flipping the collar up against the wind - that looks rather flaky to me. The windflap is only securable at the very top & bottom and it, too, looks kinda flaky; it seems to be closer to the newer 21st Century design.
Both are excellent jackets; I was a little disappointed in the design changes but still pretty happy to own the new one.

Rated 5 out of 5†by Celticode One perfectly amazing coat!
I have had this heirloom quality coat on my wish list for many years and my wonderful wife gave me this as a combined Christmas/Birthday gift and I thank her for that.
As many others have noted this is a heavy and very warm coat and that is of course true, but the workmanship and fine product details are amazing. I will only wear this to special events and proudly display it in my closet waiting for those events.
Thanks to my wife and LL Bean for this coat and I encourage anyone looking for a truly special garment to add this to your wardrobe/collection.

Rated 5 out of 5†by BeTrue2YourSelf Excellent Jacket, Good Value
Its hard to get emotional about a jacket. With that said, this jacket is very well made for the money. One can spend three time more for the sanctioned real deal, but, the quality wouldn't be three time better. The jacket is very warm, some days its too warm; therefore, for those cool but not cold days I also got the non-insulated version. The fit is spot on. I've received numerous compliments.

Rated 3 out of 5†by Chiltech Heavy & Warm but Not My Style
I bought the wool lined fur collared version in the normal brown finish/not distressed. For leather this is a warm jacket and has a heavy sturdy feel. If you like a softer leather you'll like this jacket. It is made of a goatskin which is supposed to be lighter and tougher than cowhide. I am not certain if goatskin is usually this soft - this jacket feels more like the softness of a lambskin dress leather.jackets, on the plus side it is not a thin leather. (I own heavy cowhide leather motorcycle jackets and they are not this soft).
I returned this jacket for two main reasons, the fit in the shoulders is too wide for me and the appearance didn't quite suit me. The mouton on the collar is very short and the collar looks to me relatively undersized for this large a coat. The brown is a dark milk chocolate vs a dark chocolate color and the finish is more shiny than I like.
I wear a 40-42 jacket (5'7 155lbs) and this jacket in Medium had seam overlap on both shoulders by 1-1.5 " . I don't have small shoulders. Interestingly the sleeves were not too long (I don't have long arms). The sleeves did not hike up when extending my arms which I attribute to the extra shoulder length as this jacket is not articulated in the back. I would recommend this jacket to someone with broad shoulders but not overly long arms.
