My husband normally wears XL in LL Bean outerwear. As an example, he has two parkas in XL that fit him really well. This jacket just barely zipped up. He wanted a winter jacket that would be warm on its own but could accommodate a lightweight vest or sweater, if need be. The jacket was returned the day after he tried it on. I also felt the jacket looked like it cost a lot less than it did. It didn't look like a fine leather jacket which I felt it should given the cost of the jacket.

Rated 4 out of 5áby CotoMike Bomber Jacket for many Occasions
Overall, this is a good jacket that can be used in casual to business smart dress situations. It is a little heavier than I expected but that's California's fault; never quite that cold. A true bomber jacket look that's very versatile to wear.

When I first got the jacket I was disappointed because, being unfamiliar with goatskin, I expected something soft and pliable. Instead it was stiff, shiny, and somewhat restrictive. So I wiped it with common boot oil found at the local grocery. Three applications spaced over a couple of weeks made it increasingly pliable and less restrictive. After the third application, the jacket had softened up and become a little more rooming for a fleece underneath when needed. Also at this point the jacket was starting to look and feel like it had been tailored for me exclusively. I then sprayed it with Armour All and buffed it, which gave it a nice subtle patina and made the leather look really good. Over time I became very impressed with the quality and tailoring of the jacket. After a winter of casual wear the lining started to wear thru at the seams. I sewed those spots and applied glue. At some point the liner and trim will have to be replaced-- sooner than one should expect. The interior of the jacket simply doesn't match the exterior which seems to set the standard for this type of jacket. You might pay more, but I really don't think you'll find a better jacket of this type. To sum up, if properly maintained, this is a jacket you can love over a lifetime.

Heavy enough for cold weather, but not overly so
Stylish for casual wear
Functional with an interior pocket for your wallet and such, side entry and snap exterior pockets as well

Bought the thinsulate jacket in the distressed brown in November 2014. Love the fit and it is the warmest coat I have ever had. Supersoft too. Huge quality issues however with the lining (as numerous other reviews have indicated). I take very good care of the coat, but the lining is already threadbare in the collar area in several locations. I will be returning it for a replacement, but Bean surely can't keep ignoring this type of common complaint or they are going to go broke making annual replacements of a very expensive item.

Rated 4 out of 5áby COPAPilot Thinsulate Leather Flight Jacket
The quality is high and because the leather is a heavy goat leather it took longer to break in than my previous sheep's leather coat. Inside could be better if it were lined with soft leather to just above the waste since this is where the lining tends to wear out. If the lining is of good quality, the jacket should give me many years of use both driving and piloting.

Rated 2 out of 5áby BocaJoe Made well but collar/pockets are the deal breaker
Let me say I love the look of this beautiful jacket (I bought the dark brown). It seems to be very well made and true to LL BEAN size. The THINSULATE insulation is excellent , I wore it in the bitter cold this winter and it was toasty and impenetrable to the to wind and cold. HOWEVER... the collar is so high and stiff, the collar and zipper cuts you in the neck when sitting or driving, forget wearing the jacket and a seatbelt! I thought it would loosen up with time but appears to be a design problem and beyond annoying.
The other major problem is that the side slash pockets/handwarmer pockets under the cargo pockets. They are placed so far back on the sides, you have to wretch your arm and shoulder back to get into the pockets AND they are flat, not sloped inward/downward, so even small items like keys and a phone tend to fall out and it's very difficult to get items in or out.
If these two major design flaws are corrected I would buy the jacket again in a heartbeat, but it's going back, I cannot wear the jacket like this.
I am a big LLBEAN fan and hope this can be addressed, because otherwise it is an incredible leather jacket in all other aspects.

Over 2 years with this jacket and it's the one I wear when the weather dips below freezing. Took a mile-long walk in this on a 17║ windy day and felt no pain. The wind can't get through the leather and the insulation keeps you warm. It's thick and heavy but you'll be glad because that's just what you need on a nasty cold day.

I bought this jacket January 25, 2014 and sent it back almost exactly one year later with the liner falling apart. The jacket looked and felt great, but I am not going to send a jacket in every year to replace a problem. This seems to be an ongoing issue with this jacket looking back at other reviews. I chose to replace it with the wool lined jacket. Hopefully, that works out better than this one.
