Rated 5 out of 5 by MichiganJohn First Field Coat
I just purchased the coat and wore it over the weekend. I'm 5'10", 180 lbs, wear 16 x 33 shirts and a 43R suit jacket, and the medium fit well when wearing a sweat shirt. As other reviewers have noted, the lining could be slightly shorter in the sleeves when cuffing the sleeves. There was excellent freedom of movement while climbing up and down a ladder. A TrailCam fit in the pockets. Temperatures were in the mid 40's and I was comfortable with wind gusts of 25 mph. After examining the construction, I can see that the removable liner requires that the lining not extend further into the front. If I were LLBean I would attach the lining permanently and extend the insulation.

A about 10 years ago, I bought this coat. It was chocolate brown. It was everything it was advertised to be: warm in the winter, cosy in the spring, and delightful in the fall. I fell in love with it and retired all of my other coats. I wore it all the time. As it got old, however, the color faded a bit and a couple of buttons had to be resewn. Also the corduroi sleeve lining became used. So, I thought I should replace it. Unfortunately, I discovered that my favorite color (chocolate Brown) had been retired. It is a pity because the other ones just do not please me as much. So I decide to do two things:
1. Take my old coat out of retirement and refurbish it.
2. Start a campaign to have the old color back on the catalogue.

Rated 4 out of 5 by steve16 Compared to the Cotten Lined One
I traded it in for the other Field Coat with the cotton lining. There was nothing wrong with this one, it's just that it was a bit bulkier and the one with the cotton lining fits perfectly.
I was thinking that if I wanted extra warmth I could just wear a sweater underneath and layer, so it seemed more flexible.

Rated 4 out of 5 by RichfromCanada Button problems--otherwise great coat
This coat has so much promise--it got me through many Ontario winters (only needing a parka for below -25 C). The material is very well made, durable denim like and the liner is very soft and great insulation. However, there are some design flaws. The bottom pockets are great for keeping your hands warm however the top zipper pocket is too small to be of any use. Also, there are serious button problems--they start unravelling and popping off after only a few months use. I had to re-sew the buttons which is fine, but after about five years they started tugging at the material to which they were sewn and were forming holes as they were coming off. I couldn't re-sew buttons as there were now substantial holes. Any way you could replace the buttons with a zipper? That being said, LL Bean's customer service is amazing and even after six years use they accepted the return, no strings, and gave me a full refund. AMAZING. Thank-you.

Love the coat, but the button threads are coming undone, and have needed resown.
Warm and versatile if you do not mind threads and loose buttons..
Disappointed with the quality..

Love this coat, super comfortable and it arrives soft and broken in. Warm flannel liner is soft, has many useful pockets.
A timeless classic.

Rated 4 out of 5 by becomingabeanfan Nice jacket, poor online picture
The jacket appears to be well made. However, the color did not match the online image. I ordered the olive one, and the color probably is truer to olive than the picture was, but since I was seeking the shade shown online, I quickly returned the coat, and am waiting for my return to be processed. The sizing was correct; I usually order large for coats and shirts, and even with my longer arms, it fit well. Just not the color I was expecting.

Rated 5 out of 5 by RLM1 Nice Casual Coat
I bought this coat as an after thought. I really did not need a another winter coat, but I had a 20% discount and it seemed like a good deal. Like some other Bean coats, this had some options regarding linings and I selected the one that reportedly takes the rating down to -25 degrees. When the coat arrived, it looked similar to other types of barn coats except in olive khaki color. However, the fabric is softer and more pliable. Picking it up it did not seem like a winter weight coat. I wore the coat down to NYC last week in single digit temperatures and was frankly amazed at how warm it was. If you wear a sweater or other extra layers underneath, you may actually roast. While having a zipper would certainly have made the coat even warmer, I have never felt the least bit cold in it.
The coat is nicely sewn and good quality. So far I am very pleased with it and would not hesitate to recommend it to others. One thing that I like about this coat is that in my mind it is properly sized for a winter coat, which to me means you can wear a layer under it with out pushing into the next size.

Rated 5 out of 5 by coolngruvy My husband loves this coat!!!
My husband is on his 3rd coat. He always goes back and buys this coat. It is made very well. The one he replaces he saves and uses for yard work because it is still in decent shape. The only reason he replaces is because of stains that do not come out. He loves the removable liner, because then you only need one coat for all seasons. There are lots of pockets, that is a must. I am sure he will use this coat for the rest of our midwest winter.
