Rated 5 out of 5 by Joseywales1949 great boot
I have owned the Men?s Gore-Tex Cresta Hiking Boots, Leather for over 4 years. My brother and myself have 3 pairs I absolutely love the boot it needed no break-in. About a year ago the leather split away from the sole at the front side of the boot. It is no longer water proof because of the leather splitting away from the sole. I have not done anything with the boot because it is probably 5 or 6 years old the sole has no wear I just love the boot but I cannot spend money for a new pair knowing this may happen again. I have been dealing with LL Bean for over 40 years I have been to the store in Free port Maine it is a great company and I definitely recommend LL Bean to any one wanting great products. The boots are imported so LL Bean did not make them. I still shop at LL Bean.

by geohiker1962 Soles fall off
The boots initially were great, broke in very nicely and quickly. After about 40 days of use started to notice some separation between sole and body of boot. On a recent trip involving long hikes in remote areas, the boots rapidly deteriorated and the sole on one completely detached (the other boot had a partly detached sole). Fortunately I was only about 2 miles from vehicle so was able to tie the sole to the boot with some extra bootlaces I had, and shuffle slowly back over desert terrain. This could easily have been a safety issue - having your boot fall apart can become quite dangerous in remote areas. I had only worn the boots about 60 days maximum, about half off trail (but not unusually rough) and half on developed trails. Very disappointed in this product by LL Bean.

Great boots--going into my 3rd year---wearing them everyday for work and still have the original laces too! Ready to order another pair and they are no longer available in black?--very disappointed...

Rated 5 out of 5 by Cheng1 They're Worth It
O.K., I've only had my present pair of Crestas' for 3 years and so far they're holding up well but I had my first pair for 17 years. I paid $160 for the originals, the most I had ever paid for a pair of shoes at the time, but I have to say they were worth every penny. In all fairness I took good care of them and referred to them as my "urban hikers" but they traveled the globe with me and never let me down. Comfortable, warm, waterproof, great ankle support and they always took a shine. My newer pair appear to be exactly the same with the exception of the place of manufacture, newbees mfg. in Romania and oldbees mfg. in Italy.

by Love2GetOut They don't last
I loved these boots. They are leather, look nice and are good balance between weight and protection. But they wont last. I have had a few pairs of these boots. I am limited because I need a narrow size and there are only few choices. My problem with these is just as the leather is hitting perfect comfort the sole falls off. The sole is just glued on. If you have ever had nice leather boots, you expect them to last a good long time. If you don't have a narrow foot get a better pair of boots. You will love them for a couple years but they wont last five years. Spend a few bucks more and get something with a stitched on sole and you can love them for 10 or 20 years.

Rated 5 out of 5 by sounder My Favorite Boots
I have owned these boots in a narrow, size 10, for over 6 years, I have worn them on numerous short hikes, around town in winter weather, and on two Coast-to-Coast walks of over 192 miles each across England. I am now contemplating a third Cost-to-Coast walk and wouldn't go without them. They are the most comfortable boots I have ever owned, and replace a pair of Vasques. Have kept my feet comfortable and dry in all conditions, some of which were very wet. Very highly recommend.

Rated 4 out of 5 by hessltine Good boot
These boots so far have been good had them 3 months wear them everyday for work. They don't leak! Only reason I gave 4 star is they come with cheap insoles which are really thin and don't cushion. Once replaced with good insoles really comfortable

Rated 5 out of 5 by VanWilder2 Excellent shoes
I have had the fabric version of this shoe for a couple years. Bought the leather version on sale 2 years ago and left them in the box till today. The fabric shoes still are in great shape, just wanted to try the new ones.
Took the all leather shoes out of the box today, they were kind of stiff, then took a half hour break in walk. There is still some snow, went thru the woods with mud and rocks the shoes felt better in no time. More comfortable than the fabric version, no idea why.
Waterproof, they breath well, very comfortable, sturdy, what else is there?
If only Beans would bring back or add the black version of this shoe.

by DaveNY "Trail Tanks"
These boots are awesome. I typically use these for 3 day backpacking (35-40 lbs) on the AT, Catskills, Shenandoah or Allegheny National Forest. They are very comfortable in your normal shoe size when worn with a liner sock and mid-weight wool sock (as recommended). Warm enough for 4 seasons. They've trudged through deep snow & mud, been knocked around by endless trail rocks in Pennsylvania and forged ankle deep streams keeping my feet comfortably dry and protected. I've read suggested improvements but I wouldn't change a thing. They are a classic. I treat them with Nikwax Fabric and Leather Proof for extra protection and conditioning and they still look and feel great. These boots are definitely in the "heavy" category. Consider Beans Mountain Treads for warmer drier climates or lighter hiking. Most AT thru hikers seem to prefer sneaker type hiking shoes. I prefer more protection and support. For backpacking, these boots are like tanks on the trail. They do need some time for breaking in. Walk somewhere indoors (mall, gym, treadmill) to be sure that they fit well before taking them outside. As always, LL Bean is great with returns and fitting you to the best size. Thin brown laces are surprisingly durable and have yet to be replaced.

Rated 5 out of 5 by KarlK These 6-star Crestas will wear like iron
I am extremely impressed with the fine quality of the construction, design and detail of these nylon/leather Cresta hiking boots. I have a difficult foot to fit (narrow width, even narrower heel; high, stiff arch), and I can tell already that these 10-narrow boots will be just what I need. I have not been as successful on my peculiar foot with Vasque and some other brands (my fault; not theirs). I have read other reviews on this boot regarding the merits and cons of ankle support vs. low-cut trail shoes. I actually think I can experience the best of both worlds, depending on how high I lace these up. In some circumstances, I might need a tighter support around the ankles; in other cases, not so much. I do realize I'll need a break-in period to flex these out, but that will not be a problem. I had not bought any new boots of this high quality in 20 years, so I was a bit skeptical regarding what was out there and whether I should order by mail or not. I feel I've hit a home run with these, and I look forward to using them on Appalachian Trail day hikes and, eventually, getting them into my rotation of using them on volunteer AT work trips (southwest Virginia). I highly recommend these boots and really thank LL Bean for offering them and offering such a generous satisfaction program. For my needs and expectations, the price is more than fair.
