I am retired and spend normally 7 days a week out in the woods and on the trails. If and when I want a waterproof boot with good support these are my boots of choice. I have used these backpacking and hiking in rocky and snowy conditions, and they perform very well. Crossing shallow stream that don't top the boots is easy and your feet stay dry. If I am out and it is very muddy I may wade in a shallow area of a stream to clean off the wet mud. I will clean and treat them better at home, but I can take them home with out all the mud getting in my car and without getting my feet wet.I also especially like the lacing system. The first hook is a locking hook that allows you to tighten the lacing for the foot and ankle seperately. You pull the foot as tight or loose as you want and lock it in the first set of hooks. when you pull to tighten the last hooks at the top you are only tightening the lacing for the ankle. Inserts were not the best but I normally swap out inserts in new boots anyway. Currently my boots look great but my inserts need to be replaced again due to heavy wear. These are great boots and I do highly recomend them. Too I have narrow feet and these boots come in "B: width that works great for me. They also come in wider widths, but I have no experience with them..

After 500 miles on the AT and all the off season hiking my boots are holding up great. There is still plenty of sole to carry my 260 pound frame with my 50 pound pack up and down the trails. I bought a second pair just in case but haven't needed them. The only con I have is the weight. Happy hiking.

Rated 2 out of 5áby TurbineGuy The old ones were much better
I have purchased 7-8 pairs of these over the last 15 years. The originals were the best, great insert with lots of cushion, made in Italy, and a perfect fit. The boots are now made in Romania, the fit is not what they were, the insoles are nothing more than thin felt that givs zero support or cushioning. The insole also pills and tears within the first few days. I tried to buy the old inserts for the new boots but beans doesn't sell them. When the cost went way up, and the quality went way down, I had to go elsewhere. I would buy again If the quality ever comes back to what they used to be.

Bought these for my husband for Christmas because his Bean boots from one thousand years ago finally needed replacing. About 5 years ago, he shattered his heel and his foot has never and will never be the same so buying shoes for him can be challenging. He is sometimes an 8 sometimes an 8 1/2. The 8 1/2 was too big but he is extremely happy with the 8 and loves these boots. Comfort is key for him and he wears these only on the weekends and sometimes during the week.
Will buy another pair next millenium ;)

Rated 5 out of 5áby Rich1959 Best Hiker Ever!
I tried Vasque, Mendle, and numerous other boots before I ordered the Cresta Hikers. I have owned them for more than 15 years logging hundreds if not thousands of miles on them. I have only had to replace the laces a dozen times or so. and purchased a few new footbeds. Many gore- tex boots will only guarantee water proof for a year. My last hunting trip I walked the last 5 miles out in a shallow stream and I have still yet to have them leak. Truly amazing. I am going to have to order another pair since my feet have grown slightly as I have aged in the time I have owned the boots. Get them!

I bought a pair of Cresta all leather hikers in 1997. They are absolutely the best shoe I have ever owned. You cannot destroy these boots. I have hiked in the mountains, wore them through salty Winters, hunted with them, farmed, and did muddy landscaping. They have been wet hundreds of times yet they just keep going. The leather is the best quality, but the sole is what makes them so good. Mine still have the original shoe strings!
This year I started wearing my second pair but the old ones are used every week as well. Amazing.

I'm extremely picky when it comes to my shoes, and these boots meet all of my expectations for something I'll wear every day. They look great even after two winters' worth of snow and salt, they keep my feet warm, they provide support and traction, and are quite durable. For the price, I'm not sure there's anything better on the market.

I have been a LL Bean customer for over 40 years and I am an avid outdoor person. I booked a 14 day tour of the German Christmas Markets starting in Berlin and ending in Munich. I needed a boot that would be comfortable and handle rain, snow and cold weather and especially cobblestone streets. This tour had plenty of walking and I thought the Cresta Hiiker would be perfect. I wear a size 9B and this is one of the few hiking boots that are offered in a narrow width. The product description page has a video that would lead one to believe the boots are made in Italy, mine were made in Romania. The boots while marked size 9B, ran on the wide size more like a 9C. I hade to replace the standard footbed with a thicker footbed to make up the width. The product page clearly states they require a break in. This is very true, and I found the boots took longer than expected to break in, 24 - 32 hrs. I wore the boots with mid weight hiking socks.
The first day in Berlin put the boots to the test, snow, sleet and freezing rain. The boots excelled in every respect. I wore the boots every day of the tour for a period of 8-12 hours per day, and found them very comfortable. In summary
PROS A warm, comfortable, waterproof mid range hiking boot.
CONS. Not true to width
Requires a longer break in period

Rated 4 out of 5áby box778899 Nice boots, but I would make some improvements
I have been wearing these boots daily as a delivery person for about 6 months. I really enjoy wearing them. They offer incredible support, are very comfortable, and not too heavy; all very important things for someone like me who is constantly moving and on my feet.
Having said that, there are a few minor things that you should be aware of:
1. The leather is easily scuffed. After the first day of wearing them they looked almost a few months old. This isn't a huge deal as I'm not big on aesthetics. A bit of shoe polish or leather conditioner will mask this problem.
2. Gore-Tex. The stuff keeps your feet dry, but it isn't breathable like it claims to be. Any amount of moisture seems to put the stuff on lock-down. My feet tend to sweat and this is bad news. The boots don't ventilate well and on warm days they get hot and sweaty. I haven't hiked with them yet, but I'm weary that if I do and end up getting water in over the top of them, I'll have a tough time draining and drying them out. I would have preferred a simple pair of boots without Gore-Tex, and my next pair definitely won't have it. That way, waterproofing would be optional; I could use whatever product I like on the boots.
3. Weak lace-hooks. They are easily bent and sometimes make for a bit of trouble when I lace them up in the morning. More often than not, they get bent outward and I have to press down hard to put them back in place.
Other than these three things, they are fantastic boots.
