state of ohio now allows "break-up" pattern blaze orange for hunter safety vest usage for gun & muzzleloader seasons, so i set out to find one. i ordered a medium due to reading a couple of customer reviews that stated slightly over-size; i wish to CLARIFY! the vest is not over-sized whatsoever unless you plan on hunting with nothing on underneath this vest... being an AVID ohio #go browns!# hunter the medium does fit me with a t-shirt on. i wear large everything: hunting parka, bibs, sweatshirt, etc and the medium was tight over my parka #but like so much i'll just give to one of my up & coming sons to hunt in#. thus I've ordered the large as i should've to begin with. never considered shopping l.l.bean UNTIL NOW. once finding this vest I have since found many items of interest to purchase.

Rated 5 out of 5 by dp2413 Great fit over hunting coats.
The material is soft and quiet. The sizing was just right for me. I am a normally sized man. I normally wear a size large, but in hunting clothing I order an extra large to give me a looser fit. I ordered a large in this vest and it is more than adequate to fit over my extra large hunting coats. Since I will be using this in the deer woods in the winter, the looser fit is better for me. I do not like tight fitting clothing when I am out hunting. The two pockets are normally size. For bird / upland hunting, I will use a vest with a back pouch, but for deer hunting, this is a great vest.

Rated 5 out of 5 by ChadleyWA Just what I wanted
I recently returned from a two week hunt in Montana where I used this vest. I bought this to replace an old mesh vest that was pretty well wore out. I wanted a simple vest with a couple of front pockets and without a game pocket on the back as I usually wear a backpack. This vest is exactly what I was looking for and expected. It is well made. The material is quiet. The pockets are a useful size, big enough to fit insulated gloves and a stocking cap in when I took them off as the mornings warmed up. I did not have any trouble with items falling out as other reviews have stated. The snaps are at the far corners of the flap which does create a loose area in the middle of the pocket flap but again this did not cause any problems. Sizing was as I expected. There is a lot of talk in other reviews about how large these run. This is a hunting saftey vest made to fit over your other clothing and is sized accordingly. I am 6'2 and 220#, I wear a XL t-shirt, my jacket size is also XL. I bought this vest in XL and it is sized large enough to wear over my wool jacket comfortably. It will be a little loose fitting in the warmer months over just a t-shirt but not so much as to be a bother. Overall I am very pleased with this vest. If you are looking for a well made vest at a very resonable price this is it.

Nice vest that provides hunter orange visibility requirements. I have a solid orange one that I have been very happy with and recently ordered the hardwood orange one and like the pattern a lot.
The four pockets - two hand-warmer and two cargo pockets are especially handy to hold items, and the snaps on the cargo pockets keep items secure. The solid hunter orange version states it is made from 100% acrylic with polyester pockets while the hardwood hunter orange is 100% polyester. I prefer the acrylic material over the hardwood polyester (seems more burr prone), but both have a nice feel and are quiet.

Rated 4 out of 5 by kcrboys quiet fabric, roomy fit
good product but probably not durable enough for thick brush or raspberry thickets. I hunt this type of terrain and after only 8 days the polyester had several pulls and snags. the snaps on the pockets are to close to the edge of the pocket. I had several smaller items fall out. Still...a good product at a fair price, I'd still recommend it to friends.

Rated 5 out of 5 by DeerSlayerInPA Great vest!
I was concerned the vest would run small as I wanted to wear it with varying layers depending on weather. I ordered the XXL as I am a size 50 and it fit perfectly over my winter parka. Pockets are nice and big. Fabric is heavy duty so should hold up over many years. A great purchase and price.

Rated 4 out of 5 by NYFishin Nice, could use a few things
You can't go wrong with LL Bean, so get the vest. But to be fair, it needs SHELL LOOPS (shotgun and rifle). Also, it could use a back bag for birds/little animals. I think a lot of big game hunters would like a bag in the back, and don't want to have to get multiple vests. And $34.95 ain't cheap, really. So I would get this again ONLY because L.L. Bean stands behind their stuff, and it's good-enough quality; I know if it falls apart after a few years I can replace it for free because it wouldn't have lived up to a reasonable life.
Also, I wear a 42R suit size, got a Large-size in this vest (I got the camo since the plain was sold out), and it's pretty big and long, but I'm keeping it. Also, even though I would normally have gotten the plain color, the camo really is nice and you'd think it would clash with other stuff but it doesn't really....The orange color is enough of a clash with Everything that it doesn't matter if you have camo or plain. Also, it "feels like" cotton, but I know it ain't.

Rated 5 out of 5 by CentralPAoutdoors Does the job!
I've owned the camo version of this vest for about a year now and have used it in all seasons where orange is required. It is very light and has held up nicely. The size is big! Mine is an XL and easily fits over my 2XL winter coats, which to me, is better than trying to squeeze on a small vest. During warm weather, the fit is sloppy, but it has never been in the way. The pockets are sufficient enough for some of the "extras", and extra pockets are always welcome! After all, it is a safety vest and not a utility vest. I've been pleased with mine and believe it will last for several more years!
