- Learn how to successfully lead recreational groups in the backcountry
- Get the information you need to take the state exam
This comprehensive four-day course, taught by Registered Maine Guides, will give a range of technical skills to help prepare you to lead day trips and overnight trips for backcountry camping, backpacking, snowshoeing, canoeing, and more. It will also include information on the business of guiding, safety and risk management.
Itinerary
To prepare students for the guide exam, the course will provide a solid foundation of necessary skills including canoeing, boating laws, hiking and winter camping, search and rescue techniques with practice of lost person scenarios, weather concepts and map, compass and GPS usage. Trip planning, camp cooking and Leave No Trace® principles will be explored to round out your knowledge of guiding essentials. You may also take this course simply to enhance your outdoor skill and knowledge; the exam is optional. Four day course over two weekends. End time is 8:00pm on the 19th and dinner is included that day. Note: Participation does not guarantee passing the State Guide Exam. Exam is not part of this course.
