Course Description

This summer, experience the quintessential Maine bird watching trip that starts in a coastal blueberry barren and ends on the seashore. You'll meet one of our instructors and your guide for the day, renowned ornithologist Dr. Jeff Wells, and travel to Kennebunk Plains, a 500-acre state Wildlife Management Area that was one of the first areas purchased by the Lands for Maine's Future Program. In June, these plains are alive with the songs of migrating birds, including unusual species like Upland Sandpiper (just back from a winter in Argentina), endangered Grasshopper Sparrows, Vesper Sparrows, Eastern Bluebirds, Brown Thrashers, Field Sparrows and many others.

After observing many exciting species, you'll make your way to the coast near Kennebunkport, with one or more stops along the way specifically selected by Jeff for their bird watching potential. You'll spend the afternoon walking out to Timber Point, one of the newest and most beautiful additions to the U.S. National Wildlife Refuge system. Here you'll have the chance to see Common Eiders, Snowy Egrets, Common Terns, and other summer birds of the shore.

All participants will receive a complimentary lunch and a signed copy of Jeff's book, "Maine's Favorite Birds."

About our birding guide: Maine native Dr. Jeff Wells is the senior scientist for the Boreal Songbird Initiative. During his time at the Cornell Lab of Ornithology and as the Audubon Society's national conservation director, Dr. Wells earned a reputation as one of the nation's leading bird experts and conservation biologists. He and his wife Allison are authors of the highly praised bird- identification guide, "Maine's Favorite Birds."

Cancellation and Rescheduling Policy

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.
