Course Description

Being able to roll your kayak allows you to quickly right your boat. This important skill eliminates the need for a wet exit with self rescue, limiting your exposure to cold water.

In a controlled setting, our ACA certified instructors will guide you step by step through the skills required for a successful roll. They'll begin with a brief refresher on wet-exits, tucking and T- and assisted-rescues. They'll also explain the foundation of the kayak roll – the hip-snap, the foundation of all rolling techniques.

You'll watch your instructor demonstrate each technique, learning valuable pointers along the way. You'll perform assisted rolls with a partner or your instructor to understand what it's like to be completely upside-down and then roll back up. After practicing the components of the roll, you'll put it all together and attempt to roll by yourself. Your instructor will be right there to help you if needed. Plan to spend most of the class wet, so please dress appropriately.

All necessary paddling equipment is provided.

L.L.Bean does not usually cancel events due to inclement weather. However, we reserve the right to cancel an event at any time due to severe weather, low enrollment or other concerns. If L.L.Bean cancels your event, you will receive a full refund for the cost of your reservation.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.

†Please call ahead if you plan to use your own equipment as it must pass inspection by L.L.Bean staff before use. If it's deemed unsuitable, we will provide you with the necessary equipment.
