Course Description

Hunting is a traditional and exciting way to enjoy the outdoors while also filling the freezer with healthy, delicious game. This Maine Department of Inland Fisheries and Wildlife's Hunter Education Course is more than just a gun-safety class. This two-part part course will provide a wealth of knowledge regarding equipment, proper hunting methods, responsibilities and general safety. You'll receive a course handbook, outdoor survival information and additional materials. Each course is taught by a trained, certified volunteer instructor according to statewide standards.

The course involves lectures and demonstrations by instructors as well as homework and field experiences. Most classes have some outdoor exercises. You must attend every class of the course and pass a final exam in order to receive your certificate of completion – a required component necessary for obtaining your hunting license. Although the minimum course length is 12 hours, many courses will average more hours.

*Synthetic clothing dries quickly and is the best choice for outdoor pursuits. Please do not wear cotton clothing. When wet, cotton rapidly robs the heat from your body and takes a long time to dry. We also recommend you dress in multiple layers of clothing, allowing you more flexibility to comfortably respond to the weather conditions and your level of exertion.
