We've been crafting products that can stand the test of time since our founder, Leon Leonwood Bean, first started making and testing his original pair of boots back in 1912.

He personally field-tested nearly every product he offered for sale. This kind of personal attention to detail has been our guiding principle for nearly 100 years. Today we continue to design to the finest detail for the harshest conditions.

Tested in the Lab

We test in the lab to ensure strength, resistance, and longevity. Backpacks are stretched so we know they won't break. Jackets are sprayed with the equivalent of two hours of pouring rain so we know they won't leak. And boots are frozen solid for weeks so we know they'll remain flexible.

Proven in the Field

We perfect our gear in the field to make sure it can stand up to real-world conditions: from casting flies in local streams to exploring the frozen reaches of the Arctic Circle. We've even been known to drag our gear over the cobblestone streets of Portland or toss it up on our Maine rooftop just to see how it handles a season of relentless snow.
