L.L.Bean's Trailblazers - Athletes sharing a love for the great outdoors
When Lea Davison realized that she could make mountain biking her career, she focused on riding and never looked back. "I love my job," she told an interviewer last year. She's also very good at it. Lea is the top woman mountain-bike racer in the country, and she represented the US in the 2012 Summer Games in London. The team was the most-successful women's mountain-biking team in US history.
A natural athlete, Lea had the full support of her family as she pursued many different sports, eventually focusing on skiing and cross-country running. During high school and college, she earned slalom titles and state cross-country championships. In 2000, during her junior year in high school, a friend suggested she try out for the mountain-biking team and she was an immediate success. Her passion for the sport grew and, by 2004, she was a regular on national podiums.
Lea believes that riding a bike can be empowering for girls and co-founded Little Bellas, a biking/mentoring program for girls 7-14, with her sister, Sabra. Started in Vermont, the program is now national. It's a way to pass on the encouragement she and her sister received from their mother. "Our goal is not about racing – we want to get girls on bikes and keep them on bikes."
