Seth Wescott – L.L.Bean Ultimate Testing and Design Partner
Snowboarding Champion and the Ultimate Field Tester
Over the past 15 years, Seth Wescott—the “Boss of the Cross”—has become the most successful and decorated snowboard cross athlete in history. In 2010, after years of success at the World Cup and the X Games, he won his second consecutive Winter Games gold medal in snow sports, a first for an American male athlete.
When he's not competing, his favorite place to train is the Chugach Mountains in Alaska, where he revels in the natural powder and wide-open spaces. Then it's home to Maine to enjoy surfing off southern beaches, golf and snowboarding in his backyard at Sugarloaf. Seth lives his life outside.[+ FULL STORY]
A.J. Curran, L.L.Bean Outerwear Director, describes Seth as “The modern embodiment of the Maine outdoorsman.” His passion for the outdoors and one-of-a-kind snowsports experience make him the perfect Testing & Design Partner for L.L.Bean. His love for the sport results in unique design elements, and all those remote peaks and extreme environments provide test conditions that you just can't replicate in a lab. L.L.Bean has always been dedicated to field-testing, and Seth puts outerwear to the test as only a champion can.
Seth knows that the right gear will make or break your experience. “My first trip in Bean's gear was to Antarctica. To travel that far and have gear failures was not an option. I rely on my gear to protect me and to allow me to accomplish my goals in the mountains.” He believes that when gear is performing properly, you never have to think about it. “Your whole experience is focused entirely on enjoying your activity.”
“He brings technical-level experience in snow sports and training that helps us take our products to the next level,” observes A.J. Seth’s attention to detail and thorough understanding of equipment has helped the design team create outerwear with a greater focus on what winter athletes really need.
For Seth, working with L.L.Bean is yet another goal realized. “I have an intense pride in our state and to work with the iconic Maine brand and wear its products everywhere I go in the world really is the realization of a dream. Helping to develop products that are going to enhance people’s experiences doing sports in nature is an honor and I am proud of this partnership.”[CLOSE STORY]

Seth Wescott’s Philosophy
Hunter S. Thompson, Seth's favorite author, wrote: "Life should not be a journey to the grave with the intention of arriving safely in a pretty and well-preserved body, but rather to skid in broadside in a cloud of smoke, thoroughly used up, totally worn out, and loudly proclaiming "Wow! What a Ride!" [+ FULL STORY]
Change “smoke” to “snow” and you’ve got a good idea of Seth’s approach to life. Whether he’s competing at a world-class level or in the backcountry, he’s fully committed and enthusiastic. Seth has pursued his passion and in the process, realized his dreams.
His goal in the sport since childhood had been to be a world champion. In 2005, that became a reality in Whistler. The experience was exhilarating. “When I crossed the line in the finals I was making a large, sweeping toe-side turn around the finish corral. I was so excited at having accomplished my dream – then I realized that as I was looking at fans screaming and celebrating and I couldn't hear them. Over the next twenty seconds it was as if someone was slowly turning a volume nob, returning the world’s sounds to my ears.”
Remote mountaintops provide a different experience for him. “The focus you have in the moments of riding big mountain lines is so intense that you really have these time spans where everything else in the world just fades away and you are living completely in the moment. It feels as if it is exactly where you are supposed to be in the world at that time.”
It takes courage to keep your eyes on the prize, but Seth summons it race after race. “I developed a belief in myself at a young age and I have seen my dreams through. It has been incredibly rewarding but it has not been an adventure for the weak of heart.”
Seth's ride is far from over, with many activities on the horizon. He'll focus on staying healthy, tours, charity events, the 2015/2016 World Cup Season–and a comeback for 2018.[CLOSE STORY]
