L.L.Bean Chairman of the Board Leon Gorman Receives Bowdoin College's Highest Honor
October 29, 2010 – L.L.Bean's Chairman of the Board Leon Gorman received the Bowdoin Prize, the highest honor Bowdoin College gives one of its members, on Friday, October 1, at a ceremony on the Bowdoin College campus. Leon is a Bowdoin College graduate and trustee emeritus.
The Bowdoin Prize is awarded every five years to a graduate or former member of the college who has won national recognition and has made a "distinctive contribution in any field of human endeavor." Leon was honored for his distinguished career as a business leader, conservationist and philanthropist.
Leon graduated from Bowdoin in 1956. He was named an overseer of Bowdoin College in 1983 and a trustee in 1994. He was elected trustee emeritus in 2002.
Among Leon's many contributions to Bowdoin are major support for the academic program, financial aid, faculty sabbaticals and the Outing Club. Through a gift by Leon and his wife Lisa, the college established the Bowdoin College Coastal Studies Center on Orr's Island.
Leon is the 17th recipient of the Bowdoin Prize. Other recipients include Olympic Gold Medalist Joan Benoit Samuelson, US Special Envoy for Middle East Peace and former US Senate Majority Leader George Mitchell, and former US Secretary of Defense William Cohen.
